The homepage is being completely re-designed in a month or two. It's all new and completely different.

If you create, reply or edit a discussion or comment, you will now see a toolbar that should help use some of the rich text tools. Better yet, it's got a preview button so you can check to see what it will look like before hitting submit. π

This has been added. It won't work until a new comment ends up on a discussion but you'll see them slowly roll in as people reply to posts.

Ok, first off before anyone gets upset about this... if that's how you feel, stop reading this and go right now to your account page click "Details" and change the filter setting to "No". Easy, done! π¬
Now, for the details of why this was implemented. Yes, you can find me saying I would never make this the default and clearly I'm going back on my word. The main issue is that people of all ages use TMDb (not just the discussion boards) and the more I thought about it the more I didn't like that someone could stumble into a discussion with a bunch of f-bombs being dropped.
I don't see this being a big deal as I've provided an easy out for those of you who want to see all the words in all their glory. Sound reasonable?

You can ignore users. Just click the grey "ignore" link on each discussion/reply. Their posts will completely disappear from the discussion lists and comments of a discussion.

There's only 4 right now, but they can be helpful for those on a computer.
n: Creates a new discussion
r: Replies to a discussion (when you're on one)
l: Jumps to the last post (when you're viewing a discussion)
ctrl+return: Submits a message when you're composing one (new discussion, replying to one)
Are there any others that might make sense?

A popular request, so it's been added. Feels a bit more organic now I think. Saves people from just doing a +1 or if that's all they have to say.

Fresh off the press is a push notification and notification centre. You'll see a "bell" icon sitting next to your username for this. Notifications update automatically so you don't even need to refresh the page. If a new notification comes in, BING (there's no sound, that's just me), it appears.
One cool thing is that by using these notifications (by clicking the links to go to the item that is notifying, ie. a discussion), only the first reply is thrown into view which means you automatically get a "jump to newest" thread functionality. Pretty cool, right?

You can now upload your own avatar. It is recommended you upload as close to a square as possible as we will just crop it if it's not.

You can now click the little quote icon on each discussion or comment to quote and reply. This should make it a little (ok a lot) easier to reply to certain people or comments you want to address.

I realized I pushed this and really only mentioned it on a few threads so, let me formally mention it. If you go to your account page and click the "notifications" link in the left hand sidebar you can change the default notifications. The point here was to split up being able to "watch" a discussion and get sent emails about it. These settings in your account page are the default settings. You can override them by watching or subscribing to individual threads if you want.

IMDb members made requests to have Discussion Boards added to each individual Movie and TV show page, due to the coming closure of IMDb Boards on February 20, 2017.
This is the thread that started it all.
As you read the thread please remember that MANY of the things discussed early on changed. It is quite lengthy, with hundreds of posts, but gives you an idea of what it took to make this happen.
There are TWO GROUPS of Discussion Boards, MEDIA and SUPPORT.
MEDIA - Movies, TV, Celebrity and General
SUPPORT - General, Website, API and Content Issues

Closed threads can be opened again by everyone indeed. It's an easy way to mark problems / questions as solved. Private means only the topic starter, Mods, and people already in the discussion (clicking Watch or replying and not unwatching) can see it. Even people with the url who didnt reply cant see it.

Are you referring to using it as an avatar? I've actually used TIF images before. There are different types of PNG, I have seen PNG-8 cause issues so have always saved as PNG-24, especially with transparency.

You can always convert them. Use any simple photo editor and save the png as a jpeg

I have this on my iOS devices but it might be available on other OS. It does one thing very well, resize and save to many formats.

If you want a nice free all-purpose graphics editor, I recommend Gimp. It's similar to basic Photoshop but free. You can load any file type of image then export as whatever file type you want. I use Gimp at work and at home.
Gimp is available for Windows, Linux, Mac. https://www.gimp.org/
If you need a mobile/tablet solution, Photoshop has a mobile version that is either free or cheap for Android - not sure how many features it has but I bet it can export images in a chosen format.

As dormouse7 suggested, you can use gimp. But its a full fledged photo editor. A quick and small alternative to solve your problem is to get Fastone Image Viewer. Its a Image Viewer but has a few handy, quick and easy to use photo editing tools too.

Hi Prithu, I was able to change it to a jpeg image (no laughing, I did it in 'paint', but it is still too big. I reduced it by 50% but still too big? I'm going to fool around with it today and see if I can get it to fit properly. Thanks for all your suggestions.

In Paint use the Resize and Skew button, pick the Pixel radial button, check the Maintain Aspect Ratio box.
Then lower your pixels to around 100-300px.

In Gimp, I use Scale Image, entering one dimension in PIxels and letting Gimp choose the other number to keep the same aspect ratio. THEN the harder part is dealing with TMDb's requirement for a 1x1.5 ratio. Usually a photo is wider than that 1 vs 1.5 height. Assuming a portrait mode (taller than wide) photo, I divide the height by 3, then multiple the result by 2. That is how wide I need the image to be. I now use the Canvas Size menu option, enter the new desired width, pick "Center" (if that is where the subject is) and apply. When done, I export as the desired jpeg format.

I've added links to the New Feature discussions that Travis posts. Now you can read the comments and questions people have for each feature announcement.
I also added the Push Notifications and Notifications Center announcement that was posted on the 15th. I must have confused it with the other Notifications announcement.
