Message Editing Tools and Preview

posted by Travis Bell MOD on Feb, 27 2017 at 12:03PM

If you create, reply or edit a discussion or comment, you will now see a toolbar that should help use some of the rich text tools. Better yet, it's got a preview button so you can check to see what it will look like before hitting submit. 👍

This has been added. It won't work until a new comment ends up on a discussion but you'll see them slowly roll in as people reply to posts.

Profanity Filter

posted by Travis Bell MOD on Feb, 23 2017 at 8:34AM

Ok, first off before anyone gets upset about this... if that's how you feel, stop reading this and go right now to your account page click "Details" and change the filter setting to "No". Easy, done! 😬

Now, for the details of why this was implemented. Yes, you can find me saying I would never make this the default and clearly I'm going back on my word. The main issue is that people of all ages use TMDb (not just the discussion boards) and the more I thought about it the more I didn't like that someone could stumble into a discussion with a bunch of f-bombs being dropped.

I don't see this being a big deal as I've provided an easy out for those of you who want to see all the words in all their glory. Sound reasonable?

Blocking/Ignoring Users

You can ignore users. Just click the grey "ignore" link on each discussion/reply. Their posts will completely disappear from the discussion lists and comments of a discussion.

"Liking" Discussions and Comments

posted by Travis Bell on Feb, 21 2017 at 12:19PM

A popular request, so it's been added. Feels a bit more organic now I think. Saves people from just doing a +1 or if that's all they have to say.

Push Notifications and Notification Centre

posted by Travis Bell MOD on Feb, 15 2017 at 3:17PM

Fresh off the press is a push notification and notification centre. You'll see a "bell" icon sitting next to your username for this. Notifications update automatically so you don't even need to refresh the page. If a new notification comes in, BING (there's no sound, that's just me), it appears.

One cool thing is that by using these notifications (by clicking the links to go to the item that is notifying, ie. a discussion), only the first reply is thrown into view which means you automatically get a "jump to newest" thread functionality. Pretty cool, right?

Quoting Replies

posted by Travis Bell on Feb, 13 2017 at 03:11PM

You can now click the little quote icon on each discussion or comment to quote and reply. This should make it a little (ok a lot) easier to reply to certain people or comments you want to address.

Account Notifications

posted by Travis Bell on Feb, 12 2017 at 09:05AM

I realized I pushed this and really only mentioned it on a few threads so, let me formally mention it. If you go to your account page and click the "notifications" link in the left hand sidebar you can change the default notifications. The point here was to split up being able to "watch" a discussion and get sent emails about it. These settings in your account page are the default settings. You can override them by watching or subscribing to individual threads if you want.

New Discussion Boards Added

This is the thread that started it all.
As you read the thread please remember that MANY of the things discussed early on changed. It is quite lengthy, with hundreds of posts, but gives you an idea of what it took to make this happen.

What is the difference between closed threads and private threads?

Reply by Marr 🇳🇱 MOD on Mar, 31 2017 at 1:35AM
Closed threads can be opened again by everyone indeed. It's an easy way to mark problems / questions as solved. Private means only the topic starter, Mods, and people already in the discussion (clicking Watch or replying and not unwatching) can see it. Even people with the url who didnt reply cant see it.

I see the user history isn't on the planned list yet. That makes me a sad panda. How can we build cliques without it? And what is an internet message board without cliques?! smiling_imp ghost

Link to last reply has actually already been implemented. It just only works on threads that have been replied to since the change was implemented.

I am absolutely floored by the brilliant work you have done in such a short amount of time! I'm here from the IMDb boards, after being recommended by another user. Seeing changes implemented as I'm exploring the board is very impressive! Listening to what people want is certainly not what we were used to at IMDb!

It would be great if we can have a "Plot Summary" or a "Plot Synopsis" link to every Movie/TV Series, like they have at IMDb. I do visit those pages a lot whenever I need to understand the story better.

As you read the thread please remember that MANY of the things discussed early on changed. It is quite lengthy, with hundreds of posts, but gives you an idea of what it took to make this happen.

Two ways to get to a movie page's discussions.

  1. The small chat icon Discussions link - now just below the overview and above the cast photos.
    If you click this link you go to a page with only that movie's discussions. Note: used to be in a vertical row of icons down the left side of the page.

  2. Discussions link in the Social section about halfway down the page.
    When you click this link, you get the top 3 discussions previewed on the page (unless there are no discussions) with the Go to Discussions button below.

Do you take requests for requests? Nesting threats is a big maybe, images are a maybe if figures out the logistics, proper mentions and private messaging are in the works and I think he said yes to signatures. thinking

My list started with Travis' New Features posts. Then I started seeing Travis' comments to people making suggestions that that was in the works. So I thought I'd would be helpful to add that in the list so people wouldn't have to keep asking. Do you have the threads showing Travis' confirmation that those are being worked on?

@tristavv
Just to be clear, I didn't create the site, that thanks goes to Travis Bell. I've just been keeping track of the features he's been adding so people can see them all in one place and know what's happening. It appears even the moderators have found it useful. 😃

@lantzn said:

Whew! It was harder that I expected. (I also grabbed anything that could maybe be useful along the way)

@banana_girl
I've added all but the last 3. Travis either didn't confirm them or said they weren't happening. If I read them wrong, please point me to the correct one.
Thanks for giving me these. It's hard to find some confirmations when they are buried in a non-related thread.

Two new functions which I feel could enhance the board experience:

Posting images (perhaps set at a default size to avoid huge images cluttering up the reply box)

Posting videos (most message boards feature Youtube videos )

Obviously all content must be specific to the topic thread. No Rick Roll videos! grin

How did you get the color fonts?

Great post Lantzn Thanks! I haven't seen a lot of these.

Puts into prospective how much work Travis has done already. Thanks Mr Bell.

Any chance of using images that AREN'T 'jpeg images'? I have one that is a 'png' image that I can use other places but not here.
