The Movie Database Support

One of the main reasons it hurt me to leave IMDB was the almost 1400 movies I had rated over there. I really didn't want to go back there to see what I had rated a film in the past and just wanted to abandon them altogether. Here is how you can bring your ratings over.

When you log into IMDB, on the top right corner you will see your name. Mouse over it and choose "Your Ratings" .

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and you will see "Export this list" . Click on there and save the file somewhere on your computer that will be easy for you to find.

Next, log into themoviedb and go to "your account" by clicking on your user name in the top right corner.

On the left side of the screen you will see "Account" with a list of options. Choose "Import CSV" .

Choose "Rated" when it asks to choose which list you are importing it to.

I did this and out of 1400 maybe 20 of them didn't go through and they were ratings of individual episodes to a TV show.

good to know thanks ive been doing it the long way lol.

Thanks for the advice, movie_nazi! Followed your instructions and after a few stumbles managed to import my IMDB ratings, almost 1200 of them. Yeah, I had a few that didnt go through, 'couldn't find IMDB id', which is bizarre as all ratings are under the same id. No worries though, got the great majority of them.

This place shows real promise. It depends of course just how many people wind up here. Hopefully enough will come to make for interesting discussions and with a bit of luck we won't have all the trolls that infested the IMDB boards.

Yeah, it's not going to happen overnight, but I'm confident it'll happen. Actually, having spent some time on this site now, I already prefer it to IMDb. There are a few aesthetic nuisances, but for the most part it's very, very detailed, and much more public. Hopefully once it becomes really popular there'll be loads of other third party services able to use its API and find us where films on our watchlist can be viewed etc.

Unfortunately, trolls are like rats, the higher the human population then the higher the rat population.

I'm confident this site will take off. I have been trying to spread the word over at IMDB but all I get is push back from whiny nitpickers. "It doesn't have the full cast. It doesn't have a 'I Need To Know' section. You can't reply to individual posts. It doesn't have as many movies in its data bank as IMDB." nose_tone1 (said with an extremely nasally whiny voice). I'm still posting at IMDB and leaving the link to this web site to continue my post discussion after the 20th. I suggest everyone else do the same.

Frickin' crybabies! GAWD! - Napolean Dynamite

Thanks for that, movie_nazi. Just imported all 1265 of my rated movies after starting out doing it the hard way. Hopefully this site will start getting more traffic after the 20th when people lose the forums on IMDb. This definitely looks the best of the sites I have found so far.

You are very welcome!

Look, they don't call me the movie nazi for nothing. grin I am extremely picky when it comes to films and equally when it comes to film forums. If it doesn't have what I feel are the essentials I would not recommend it. This is why I am spending time at all my old haunts at IMDB (Westworld, Vikings, Game Of Thrones, TWD, Star Wars, Star Trek) and telling them about this place not only because I think this is a worthy heir but also because I will miss those people! cry

out off 4465 titles I was able to import 4106 missing 359,so it works to out 3173 movies and 933 tv shows, not to bad.

WOW! That's a LOT of titles! Very nice job! Yeah, it's not gonna have all of them. People need to understand that IMDB has about a decade head start on this web site so of course it is not going to have as much data but it has a lot considering . I have yet to look something up and go "Aw man, this is missing this, this and this." so it is a decent database.

If you had some problems, can you guys give this another go? I just pushed a completely re-architected way of importing the import and it should be a lot more resilient. I'd like to know how it works out.

Using an iPad to Import Your Lists

At IMDb go to the end of one of your lists and touch the "Export this list" link.
A spreadsheet in the Safari window will appear

Touch the screen to reveal the "More..." link at the top left of the spreadsheet.
(This fades in and out so touch the screen to make it fade back in).

Depending on your setup choose one of these options;

  1. Choose the "More..." link and the "Add to iCloud Drive" option.
(you must have iCloud Drive turned on in Settings). Save it directly into the iCloud Drive selecting that choice.
It will save as a CSV file.

  2. Choose the "More..." link and the "Save to Dropbox" option.
(you must have a free Dropbox account setup). Choose the folder or location in your Dropbox and Save.
It will save as a CSV file.

At TMDb go to your Account by clicking on your Name in the upper right.

In the Account list in the left menu, choose the "Import List" option.

Under "Import to which list?" use the drop down menu to pick Rated, Favorite or Watchlist, depending which list you exported.

Under "Select CSV file" touch the "SELECT FILES..." button.

Choose either the "iCloud Drive" or the "Dropbox" folder and locate the CSV file you saved.

The CSV file will appear when downloaded. Touch the "Import" button.

Thanks a lot, i imported both my ratings and watchlist fast like that.

I re-imported my ratings list and before I had about 20 that I got the "Couldn't find IMDB ID" error message and this time I only got about 12 so a slight improvement. However out of over 1330 titles I ain't complaining! grin

Good stuff, I'm happy to hear my fixes worked!

Thank you. This is very helpful.
