Keywords

Keywords Edit

Keywords should be chosen very carefully. You can think of keywords as an exercise for an English class where you have to choose only the few very best keywords (no spoilers) to describe the plot of movie.

While there is no hard limit, around 5-10 keywords for TV shows and 15-20 keywords maximum for movies is reasonable. Do ask for help if you need some advice or a second opinion.

Please use your judgement. Copying the top IMDb keywords is generally a bad idea.

Quotes, taglines, titles, actors, characters, crew, original story writers, networks, companies and award ceremonies are generally not accepted as keywords.

There are, of course, some exceptions. For example, some characters or mythical figures (e.g. Santa Claus) appear in many film series. Some historical figures and actors are the subject of several biopics. Sometimes, movie titles just happens to be relevant keywords e.g. Jungle. And, while award ceremony keywords should not be used movies nominated for a specific award (e.g. Academy Awards), they could be used for a documentary on the history of an award ceremony.

Do not re-add the movie genres as keywords. For example, the "comedy" keyword shouldn't be used for comedy films, or "drama" for drama films.

A notable exception is the "family" keyword. Family as a keyword does not have the same meaning as Family as a genre. The keyword can be used when family is a strong theme or when the movie is centered on a family. Therefore, they can be used on the same entry: The Croods is a family film (genre) about a family (keyword).

Most trivia-based keywords (e.g. face slap, one word title) are better off as lists. However, some pre-approved trivia keywords such as "3d," "based on novel," "woman director," and "duringcreditsstinger" are allowed.

Note

Translated keywords are not yet supported. That mean no non-English keywords unless they are words commonly used in English.

Keywords should be objective. No opinion or judgment.

Keywords have to be added one by one. First add "superhero" and then "los angeles." Please do not try to add multiple keywords at the same time "superhero, los Angeles," the system will not split the keywords.

Please use already existing keywords when possible. Avoid creating duplicate keywords for plurals, alternative names or spellings. For example, there is no need to create a new "mini-series" or "tv mini-series" keyword, there should only be one keyword for all miniseries entries. Use the "teenager" keyword instead of creating a new keywords for teenagers, teen or teens.

Years, decades (e.g. "1990s") and centuries (e.g. "19th century") keywords can be used when the story is set in the past or the future. For example, for movies released in 1975, a story set in 1960s is the past and a story set in 1980s is the future. Thus, keywords such as "future" are based on the year of the release, not 2020.

Please note that the year/decade of release (e.g. 1990s for Titanic) should not be used as a keyword. The data is already part of the release date section.

We reserve the right to delete incorrect keywords and remove any non-relevant or spoilery keywords from a specific entry. But contributors should not, under any circumstances, delete good keywords.

Pornographic keywords should only be added to entries set to adult:true.
