Discuss Grantchester

I haven't read or heard (and haven't actually sought out) any reports of how UK viewers liked Season 5, or what the major developments during it are. Hopefully it'll be a winner!

For those who might like a refresher of some of last year's/season's developments and discussion, see this thread, as well as the thread linked within it that it's a continuation from.

Incidentally, I just now remembered that I actually did the other week read and save a brief piece, from TV Guide magazine, about the new season. Following is some of what it says:

Season 5 of this cozy U.K. mystery begins optimistically enough. Newish vicar Will Davenport...has settled in; his crime-solving partner D.I. Geordie Keating...and wife Cathy...have repaired their marriage. Then reporter Ellie Harding (Lauren Carse) upsets the equilibrium, testing Will's faith and his self-imposed celibacy...."

Is Ellie Harding an established character from past seasons? I don't remember her any from last season (which was when I begin watching Grantchester).

Yup, I guess Mrs. C will move back to the rectory full-time now. No more cozy sleepovers with Daniel for Leonard -- I can't imagine she'd be sanguine about something like THAT!

I don't think Sidney necessarily "got around" before he became a clergyman. He did have a [too] long-suffering relationship with Amanda, most of which was unrequited due to her class-conscious, overbearing father. He suffered from PTSD because of his war experiences (e.g., I think he shot a soldier to put him out of his misery), so these seemed to be the causes for his excessive drinking. On the other hand, I have a vague memory of Will saying he'd been kind of a wild ass in his youth (in a conversation with Geordie?). Maybe I'm wrong.

Yes, Will had shared a prostitute with his father and he got a married woman pregnant.

@wonder, was it ever mentioned if the child was ultimately born (or solely that the woman became pregnant)?

Whoa! Okay, thanks wonder2wonder! I thought there was something about Will's wayward youth but I forgot that it was so sordid. Since you mentioned it I now have a hazy recollection that all of this came out when he visited his family, not long before his dad committed suicide. I think one of the house guests at the time was a woman Will had a sexual relationship with -- maybe even the one he impregnated, and maybe an in-law/close family friend to boot. Well, it seems the guy has done a one-eighty...

I wonder if this fictional plot line in Grantchester, where the clergymen have a lot of personal baggage themselves (Physician, heal thyself!), is meant to be a cynical view of people of faith, especially when coupled with Mrs. C's intolerance, etc? Although, I must say she redeemed herself in this recent episode somewhat by first treating the Pakistani vandal kindly (albeit partly out of curiosity because it was obvious he and her husband were acquainted) and then - without a second thought - giving him back his mother's emerald ring (that was a big emerald too - $$$). And I guess all of the jewelry she was putting back in the case were items Jack had given her and she wanted no part of his ill-gotten gains. I'm still in a bit of shock over that revelation. Mr. Chapman seemed, and still seems, like a nice man. Maybe he shouldn't be judged so harshly though since what he did was fraught with risk and tremendous danger at a time when people of both Muslim and Hindu faiths were slaughtering each other with abandon, in HUGE numbers, and the English weren't exactly beloved either and had lost the leverage of power.

I liked the scene in the restaurant. That was both moving and well-played.

The pregnancy was terminated.

This was mentioned in S4E5, when Will got a phone call and returned to his family estate with Geordi. He finds an old friend beaten by his father, and later the husband of the woman he got pregnant is murdered.

You're doing a good job of refreshing my memory wonder2wonder, and it spares me the trouble of re-watching previous episodes just to look up various things!!! I now recall that the man who was beaten was an elderly servant who, along with his wife, had been connected to the family for a fair amount of time. He was accused of stealing household valuables - that's why he was beaten. But it turned out that Will's mother sold the items because she needed cash to run the household, and the loyal servant took the punishment, refusing to rat her out. Nice family, eh?!?!

While I'm on the subject, why do I have a feeling that Will's mother is going to end up being disappointed with the second husband??? Like, maybe he has cash flow troubles too and he wrongly presumes she's a wealthy widow...

I'm watching episode two right now but had to reply to your comment about Will's mother. It would serve her right if he was only marrying her for nefarious reasons.

Btw, I don't know whether anyone else might think so, but I came to the conclusion a week or so ago (after keeping on thinking she somehow looks very familiar) that the actress who plays Margaret Osborne in Beecham House looks like she could easily be (though she's not in actuality) Jemma Redgrave's (who plays Will's mother on Granchester) sister or other close blood relative!

Jemma

Dakota Blue Richards

It's probably just me who thinks that.

I agree bratface. I'm not too fond of Will's mother!

Well genplant, I hope Dakota Blue Richards never reads your comment since Jemma Redgrave's old enough to be her mother!!!

lol. I mean they (IMO) have strong resemblance to one another.

In the mouth area, I see the resemblance.

Here are two more photos (less makeup):

So, in tonight's Episode 4 Cathy's mom, Diana, was revealed to be bipolar (at least that's what I concluded she is). It was heartbreaking how things played out - and certainly a very weird dinner party!
