Discuss Grantchester

I haven't read or heard (and haven't actually sought out) any reports of how UK viewers liked Season 5, or what the major developments during it are. Hopefully it'll be a winner!

For those who might like a refresher of some of last year's/season's developments and discussion, see this thread, as well as the thread linked within it that it's a continuation from.

Incidentally, I just now remembered that I actually did the other week read and save a brief piece, from TV Guide magazine, about the new season. Following is some of what it says:

Season 5 of this cozy U.K. mystery begins optimistically enough. Newish vicar Will Davenport...has settled in; his crime-solving partner D.I. Geordie Keating...and wife Cathy...have repaired their marriage. Then reporter Ellie Harding (Lauren Carse) upsets the equilibrium, testing Will's faith and his self-imposed celibacy...."

Is Ellie Harding an established character from past seasons? I don't remember her any from last season (which was when I begin watching Grantchester).

I re-watched the finale, paying special attention to the scene when it was thought by Leonard that his father cried about the landlord/barkeeper, having never seen him cry about his mother. But actually, Russell (the father) didn't cry just about Gideon - Leonard got that wrong. The scene unfolds at bedtime, and Russell was in his cups after a long day at the pub, slurring and morose. He started out by saying to Leonard, "I let her down, didn't I?" That's when he began to sob. Then he continued, "She'd do everything and I... Bless her". He mentioned Gideon's death again and said, "Such a lovely chap", and sobbed a little more. Later in the episode when Leonard accused him, he seemed bitterly affronted to me rather than surprised that his son was aware of a secret life. Taken together, these two scenes don't cause the father to necessarily ping my gaydar! On the other hand, when father and son part, Russell asks Leonard if his bosses know about his homosexuality, which Leonard takes as a threat. SO, maybe the dad was suggesting that if Leonard goes public with HIS accusation, he will too. We'll see -- I'm sure if the father returns in future episodes we'll find out one way or another since the gay theme is such a prominent part of the show's plot.

I've thought about genplant's point that only one child was born of the Finch marriage, but after seeing how big of a drunk the dad is, it's really no wonder IYKWIM. And BTW, some of you may recall that actor Sean Gilder was featured in Poldark, playing Tholly, a friend of Ross who helps him rescue Dwight from the French prison.

He slept with Grace? Well, that just makes me dislike him even more (I really didn't care for him from the beginning)! I also thought it was sweet of Mrs. C to invite Daniel to the party.

Well bratface, one of your spoiler links reported that Will was going to bed a nun! Did you forget?!?!

I thought Geordie's reaction to Will's one-nighter with Grace was funny, especially when he asked - in earnest - if she was wearing her wimple! I took it to indicate he thought Will's attraction to her was kinky, fetishistic, when actually she seemed to be someone with pretty keen insight and knew what was troubling Will - and just how to fix it! I also thought it was funny when, post-coitus, she asked Will how old he was but then quickly said she didn't want to know LOL. The whole interlude bordered more on fantasy than realism, that's for sure. I don't know if I've EVER seen a nun as good looking, for example...

I definitely LOL'd when Geordie made the wimple comment to Will!!! joy

When the scene began of Will talking, alone, with Grace, and her blonde hair was down and looked decidedly glamourous (which it, and she, hadn't prior to then) - then, gradually, I noticed her every so many seconds seeming to approach a tiny bit closer, steadily, I found myself thinking, "Is what I think is about to happen actually gonna happen?!" And sure enough it soon did!

Looking at his chequered past, Will does tend to be attracted to 'forbidden fruit', especially married women. Or could it be the 'motherly' versus the 'dominant' type?

Btw, Will was a bit of an @ss at his mother's engagement party (or whatever the formal event was), when he showed up drunk and proceeded to become ever-increasingly more inebriated.

I missed most of the episode, just saw bits & pieces & then the last scene between Geordie & Will.

Here's about the actual village of Grantchester. I most of the time forget that the series is set (and filmed) in a village named Grantchester that does actually exist.

I'm disappointed that throughout this series, Grant Morrison has yet to make a cameo, and there's not been even one scene in which Grand Funk Railroad appears on the soundtrack

Don't you mean Pink Floyd?
