The Movie Database Support

Hi! I use TMDb API in my project and suddenly API stops working. Chrome developer console shows just "ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT". This has been going on since yesterday. It is not my app error, because other github projects similar to my doesn't getting TMDb data too. You can see that behavior here: https://nk11dev-movies.herokuapp.com (when you first open data may be cached and all seems OK, but you can see API not fetching data if you try to change page and open the browser console and wait for 1-2 minutes).

As mentioned in that issue: https://www.themoviedb.org/talk/603668c62476f200402f73ca, I test my Example API Request in REST client and have error message "Error: Timeout was reached". I dont't think this is problem with my TMDb key, because, as I mentioned above similar TMDb sites from github can't fetch data too. Can you tell whats happen?

Please help!

themoviedb == tmdb

Wow, it works. Thank you @sunriser.

@sunriser, Thanks for sharing. It works.

But, unfortunately, I think this is just a question of time when this wll be blocked. And the reason will be not your message in that thread about that way.

Because there was a mention before about some application which causes that blockings.

Some idiot makes android application (he has posted app in GP GooglePlay ) As I understand "api.themoviedb.org" he use for get movies data and give an opportunity to watch movies without pay. The copyright holders are not happy, they are suing. The trial is not over, but the blocking order is already in place and as we see blocking works for us. link

If author of that app will come here he can just use that and it ends. I suppose, RKN tracks this app and if it work again, it will be shutted down again.

The way that you offer earlier about sending solution by email would not prevent that, bacause that person can write you too and ask for solution as anybody else.

Unfortunately, the behavior of API users who break the law affects other fair API users as well.

I believe a situations similar to this has happened before in other countries.

Surely there were people, who violated the rights of copyright holders using the TMDb API. And there was blockings by local ISP's in that countries too.

BUT this didn't cause mass blocking in all countries and TMDb is still working in most countries.

@travisbell, Hi. Please, can you help us?

  1. How do you resolve situations when someone violates the rights of copyright holders? Do you somehow block users who use the API in order to violate the rights of copyright holders, but so that it does not affect other fair API users?
  2. How can we prevent repetition of a blocking situation with current working way?

Hi all!

I'v got tha same problem Moscow, Russia ISP - Rostelecom In past (last week) i use API for my synology NAS

I haven't seen it mentioned before but look at this -

  • I'm unable to access API at api.themoviedb.org from via my ISP connection, but it's accessible via other providers just fine. Several people using the same ISP cannot access api as well.
  • telnet on ports 80 and 443 is also not connected.

The friends of mine who use this ISP in other areas of the city have the same problem Periodically, the api link starts working in the chrome browser. But only on brouser and only 1-2 times per 1-3 days. On synology NAS - test launch doesn't work at all! The ISP has tested on his side all he can and does not know what the connection problem may be I wrote a direct email on the THDB web-site 2 days ago but I ** didn't even get a notification about it in my email**

So, does anyone have any ideas on how to solve the problem or how to attract the attention of TMDB developers?

@Peker, Hi.

I just wrote to Travis Bell above (https://www.themoviedb.org/u/travisbell), he is the founder of TMDb.

Unfortunately, I dont't know how to write a direct messages here. Is there any other ways?

He left a message in this thread about a week ago. After that, I have not seen any messages from him in this thread.

I hope, he will pay attention.

Edit:

I suppose, this thread with 110+ messages and 20+ participants is big enough to be noticed by the administration.

@ticao2, Hi! Maybe you can help us?

We are looking for Travis Bell here. We wrote here several messages to him and he does not respond.

There last one direct question was 5 days ago and still without response.

@travisbell Hi! Please tell me if it is worth waiting for a solution to the problem with access from Russia?

Is there any other ways to get feedback?

I think he must be following this conversation.
But I don't think he found a way to resolve the issue, either.
It is not yet clear to me whether it is a judicial problem or not.
A decision by a judge in Russia would affect all ISPs.
If the cause is a judicial decision, I have no idea what TMDb can do.
One of the previous cases that I posted seems to me to be judicial.
https://www.themoviedb.org/talk/6036ee9d4fd141003eae8534?page=2#603722ffd132d60040a3f316
If the problem is only with one of the ISPs then report here.
In this case it shouldn't be a legal problem and maybe Travis Bell can get in touch with them.

The strangest thing in all that story is the mention about suing process with link and some working ISP's in same time.

BUT some ISP's is still working. I asked people from another region and city to check it out and there was some ISP's with working API connection.

And what is the more strange is that the same ISP's with working API connection from one city blocked same connection in another city.

And people's reviews of different ISP's in different cities are different. One provider works in one city, but not in another.

we can open ticket regarding Russian problem on: https://trello.com/b/bVlsp6wz/api TRAVIS BELL'S PROJECTS: https://tmdb.lighthouseapp.com/users/163856?page=1

Half the solution to the problem is similar to Dr. House's problems.
Make the correct diagnosis.
Undoubtedly, it is strange that a judicial decision affects only one ISP and only in one region.
The same ISP works in other regions.
If I understand you correctly, you say that the same ISP blocks in one city but does not block in another city.
Does this occur using the same APP?
Or was the test done using a browser or another APP?

The one app (my web app) was tested from different regions. From web browser. Without VPN or some other tools.

I suppose, on the next week I will have a more statistics from different locations and different ISP's using API from my app.

Edit:
Yes, you are right.
Same app and same ISP.
But different cities and different behavior.

But that's not all. Seems by what people wrote here there was different behavior of one ISP in one city.

Other APPs on other platforms also use the TMDb API.
Desktop, mobile, media center ... Kodi, Plex, Synology ...
Any news of connection problems with these APPs?

Yes, there was some messages about other platforms, not only web browsers.

There was messages from one person about Android with this problem

@7720@bk.ru said:

very strange: through the Opera browser i can go to the api.themoviedb.org and the requests is processed. BUT THROUGH GOOGLE HROM NOT. requests through AndroidStudio is also not work.

And about Kodi connection problem from another person.

@bogdasar said:

TMDB plugin for Kodi don't work. In Russia too frowning_face

And about web browsers the most.

Dear ticao2 šŸ‡§šŸ‡· pt-BR,

no important platforms, APPs - in case IP blocking: request not pass to TMDb server... Browser Opera working with VPN and request passed.
