Would offering something similar be something tmdb would want to do? It seems very well placed to pinch the rejected user base.
Just a thought. Moderation headache might mean it's more trouble than it's worth of course

Those forums for only specific movies and tv shows got very heated and malicious at times. It's easier said than done to just ignore the trolls who popped up out of nowhere. They would interrupt the flow of the discussion/debate using profanity, insults, etc. The vitriol was unbelievable! Case in point to the only board I posted on: Making A Murderer. If any of you care to read some of the threads (Sept., Oct., Nov.)before they disappear) you will see for yourself just how malicious it became. I must have had at least 20-25 posters on my Ignore List. I can attest to the fact when the profanity and insults were reported, the mods took action and deleted the post. But, the same posters would sling it again and again...they weren't banned. This is why I suggested to have stringent rules and we, the community, report the posts to the mods. Three strikes...they are banned! Sure they can change their e-mail and ID, but eventually their true natures come through.

@domremy
Now, now domremy your snide replies are what we hope to avoid here. This is one of the reasons the IMDB message boards are being shut down. I do hope those of us from IMDB will check ourselves and reply politely otherwise this site will end up where IMDB left off. You actually can have differing views with good debates without childish replies. And...we don't need those malicious trolls spewing venom!

i would not mind if this site would become same as IMDb, of course with big amount of people you must expect trolls, if you just ignore them and mind your discussion it's not problem, i don't remember IMDb boards for trolls,i remember them for big source of information and good discussions about movies i watched, the importance of trolls is overstated, reminding me culture of fear with terrorists, by giving them more credit you just raise their significance while statistically they are irrelevant by number of death and cardiovascular diseases and other boring stuff kill much more people but it's not attractive for media, 95% of IMDb threads i read in movie specific forums didn't have problem but we talk here about those few irrelevant

I am new here to from IMDB. If you do set up the msg boards, I would gladly donate for the added bandwidth, servers, whatever needed. I am sure many others would too.

@travisbell personally i think the most appropriate location for link would be right next to Review button in both views, but it's up to you
i am also willing to donate if you have some donation option for IMDb refugees

While I'd like to see you add forums (its the only reason I visit IMDB), it wont work out for you. The special snowflakes can't stand to see anything negative, you're already seeing examples in this thread.

Sad news indeed given the huge history of contributed discussions on IMDB. Their hints that the IMDB social network accounts are supposed to be the replacements is laughable because social networks have volatile discussions and haphazard comments to whatever is posted there. I just now tried to search IMDB's Facebook page for a few well known movies and the results were barely even about the movies but things like actors on the red carpet, doing other movies, etc. Just current news. Nothing at all discussing the script of the movie I searched for, etc. Using a social network as a forum replacement is like using a pub as a library replacement.

I can't believe such a stupid decision is being made. I've gone on IMDB nearly every day for 10 years just for the message boards and now I have no reason to go there. Because of mean comments?? GMAFB. Those are everywhere! I have read/posted in wonderful discussions about plots, actors/actresses, directors, etc. I guess it depends where you're looking. I really hope IMDB rethinks this decision. So bummed.

btw. for new IMDb users here - you can export your ratings and watchlist on IMDb to CSV file and easily imported both lists here, so no point to go back to IMDb, I am done with them

Travis wrote: I restored the previous discussion pages, as I mentioned earlier. You can see a new link on all movies, tv shows and people right above the "Videos" link. For each media type there is a "General" forum category. The path is just /discuss on all pages.
I for one really appreciate this Travis, but can't seem to find this new link. Or a "Videos" link. I am new to this site and desperately seeking an alternative to IMDB!

I think the idea that people can't be rude is problematic because what is considered rude is so subjective. I think that it is important to allow for discussion, open discussion, not just praise and teaching. Also teaching would be so subjective, like they wrote their opinion and it was wrong so i am teaching them. Obviously there are legal issues and spamming that probably have to be moderated, but i think that other then that imdb self moderated just fine. I never went into any of the tv boards that i thought were out of hand. The sexist attitudes in the Game of Thrones forum being the worst and really the worst thing about the Game of Thrones board was that it seemed to be like fifty people with multiple usernames replying to other version of themselves. Seriously though, that was one forum out of the many many forums that i had been to. It was just that one that had problems.

Just to re-iterate, movie/tv/person discussions are back. I'll be working on linking them off the mobile pages today. I didn't find time to get to that yesterday.

fyi: There are a couple sites attempting to re-create the IMDb message boards:
http://imdb2.freeforums.net/ https://www.imdforums.com/index.php
They will never have discussions for individual movies/people/etc, because the database isn't there. That's what you have here. I think there are some major UI deficiencies here (re:posters! especially) but if there was a way to co-mingle ... one of those sites for the General Discussions, here for specifics ... that might be cool.
