An impressionistic essay film on Berlin during the transition to unification after the fall of the Berlin Wall, combining animation of Mick Cullen paintings, live action and music of Raymond Deane, with sound by Jane Gogan.

Maddin's film incorporates found footage to provide a glimpse of wartime Berlin. Crowds of soldiers march in formation, play instruments and engage in training drills. Burning fires and a frantic pace contrast with the organized movements of the troops, perhaps foreshadowing the destructive events to come.

"Berlin" is the portrait of a city sketched on DV tape, a mosaic of life as experienced by Argentine immigrants. Dispensing with dialog, this pic by Homero Cirelli comes close to the feel of a silent movie, though music and sound effects are used to create atmosphere. Aiming to capture moods and moments, it has an quality that should appeal to under-30 festival auds, who will appreciate the lack of German stereotypes.
