Mastro Geppetto is a poor carpenter with no wife and no children. The man is very lonely, and when trading a piece of wood with his colleague Mastero Cherry, he decides to build himself a puppet to make him company.

Un village de Toscane vers la fin du xixe siècle. Employés du forain et marionnettiste Mangiafuoco, « Le Chat » et « Le Renard », distribuent des affichettes pour le spectacle. Ce qui donne l'idée au pauvre menuisier Geppetto de se fabriquer une marionnette. Bien qu'avare, son voisin Cerise lui donne une bûche dont il cherchait à se débarrasser. Sa marionnette achevée, Gepetto la baptise Pinocchio. Mais celle-ci se met à bouger et à parler. La nuit suivante, une fée transforme la marionnette en petit garçon de chair et de sang, qu'elle menace de ramener à l'état de pantin à chaque faute qu'il commettra. Ce qui n'empêche pas Pinocchio de voler, peu après, un fromage à un pêcheur...

Der alte Tischler Gepetto hat nie Glück gehabt im Leben. Alles was er sich immer wünschte, war ein Kind und eines Tages beginnt er sich aus einem Stück Holz eine Puppe zu basteln. Eine gute Fee erweckt die Puppe zu Leben und es wird ein Junge aus Fleisch und Blut aus dem Kleinen. Gepetto ist überglücklich und will aus dem Kleinen, den er Pinocchio nennt, einen anständigen Jungen machen. Pinocchio aber ist ungehorsam und abenteuerlustig. Er büchst aus, um spannende Dinge zu erleben, ist aber meist so naiv und fällt dabei immer wieder auf Schwindler und Gauner herein. Gepetto, der sich unendlich Sorgen macht, macht sich auf die Suche...

Il falegname Geppetto si fa un burattino di legno, Pinocchio, che una Fata protettrice trasforma subito in un bambino in carne ed ossa, facendosi promettere che sarà un bambino "per bene", ubbidiente e studioso, bastone della vecchiaia del suo genitore. Siccome il bambino, che ha conservato il carattere vivace e ribelle del burattino, ne combina di tutti i colori, la Fata lo fa tornare di legno per punirlo. Le trasformazioni si succederanno più volte e, una volta, Pinocchio diverrà persino somaro. La vicenda termina un poco prima del libro, cioè quando Geppetto e Pinocchio escono dal ventre della Balena: quasi un ritorno alla vita, una presa definitiva di contatto con la realtà.
