Overview

1964年（昭和39年）秋。東京オリンピックが目前に迫っていたが、谷田部みね子（17）は今ひとつ実感が湧かない。みね子は、茨城県の北西部にある山あいの村・奥茨城村(※)で育った。交通の便が悪いため、同じ関東なのに東京は遠い世界のように思える。みね子の家は６人家族。不作の年に作った借金を返すために、父は東京に出稼ぎに行っている。高校を卒業したら、農家の仕事を手伝って祖父と母に楽させてあげたい…。そう思っていたみね子の人生は、お正月に父が帰ってこなかったことで一変する。
