Discuss World of Dance

I hope this show is good. The judges seem very knowledgeable. I love dance shows, but Im not sure about this one yet. It's a bit corny.

I like it so far. I think it's a tad over produced and they were too easy on some of them. That little contemporary girl was fantastic for eleven years old, but they acted like she was the best dancer they'd ever seen. She relied too much on her flexibility. I agree that she had great passion though.

It seems they are going more for quota or conversation points than merit. There also seems to be a mix of professional and amateur dancers, which puts the amateurs at a disadvantage. I recognize A LOT of people from SYTYCD (winners and cast offs) who have gone on to do other things. That teenage ballroom couple that did the paso, salsa, jiv, cha cha combo has been on a lot of things to include DWTS a few times.

I agree with everything you said! I recognized some of the hip hop crews from ABDC (America's Best Dance Crew) and of course some from SYTYCD (Fiction and others). I also didn't really like that they hyped up Les Twins so much. They had years of experience dancing for Beyoncé. They are good but the judges acted like their performance was miraculous and I just didn't see that. Hopefully the judges will tone down how much they love everyone. Maybe they acted like that because it was the premiere.

I never watched AI with JLo as a judge. I really like her passion for what she does. I miss SYTYCD. It was my favourite dance show (Mary Murphy spiced it up). I just couldn't get in to DWTS.

I agree with you. I think the over-excitement by the judges may have something to do with the editing of the show. The disclaimer after the credits said that the show was heavily edited, so I took that to mean they didn't show all of the people who performed. They probably only showed the stand-out performances, which was why it seemed like they were amazed by everyone.

I agree about the Les Twins, too. They are good, but I've seen better. They actually got booted off SYTYCD's audition rounds. I can't remember which season they tried out, but it was one of the early ones. They are significantly better now than they were back then, but I still remember them as SYTYCD castoffs. I miss SYTYCD as well. I haven't been able to watch the last couple of seasons; it has gotten so bad over time. The talent pool on that show isn't what it used to be.

I haven't yet watched tonight's episode (the second of this series' debut season), but am 100% in agreement with anyone who prefers, and considers best, SYTYCD. I've been a huge fan of that series since its beginning, and hope it's going to be returning some week soon. Does anyone know if it's supposed to? Or has it perhaps been canceled?

Meanwhile, I don't mind this new series, though it's so similar in format to all "the usual" general competition shows that it feels like yet another of the same basic formula. SYTYCD, on the other hand, always has felt like it much more so does its own thing.

I've never cared about DWTS; just isn't my sort of show or competition that much appeals or interests. It seems to be more about gimmick than actual supreme talent.

If SYTYCD is maybe returning soon, I hope Mary Murphy also returns, as I always have been a fan of her on there!

Seems like we think alike!

I hadn't checked to see if SYTYCD was returning. I assumed it was cancelled, but I just checked this website: http://www.thefutoncritic.com/showatch/so-you-think-you-can-dance/ and it looks like it will return this Mon June 12. I hope that is accurate information because I haven't seen any trailers. Mary M will be returning. I am so excited!!!

I DVRed last nights episode of WOD, I hope it is interesting and engaging. Happy viewing!

Yippee: I now see that, indeed, the following also confirms that SYTYCD will be returning next Monday - and, yes, with Mary Murphy included!: http://www.fox.com/so-you-think-you-can-dance

Bring it - and Mary - on: The Hot Tamale train is back in the station! train2 sunglasses

Last night I eventually watched the 2nd installment of WOD. It was pretty good, but in a "no big deal" sort of way to me; I basically enjoyed it, most of the time, but felt that it's so formulaic, like no end of other competition shows, with all the backstage fawning and hugging, and all the filmed sob-story segments, that I found myself overall not impressed, or personally actually caring about anyone. (I get tired of all the hearing about broken homes, deaths, etc. You can anymore expect some such type thing from seemingly every other contestant. I even found Fiktion's sob story tiresome on last night's show - and he did the whole sad and desolate look, yet couldn't quite produce a made-for-t.v. tear to complete the effect. Yep: I'm pretty jaded about all this sort of thing.)

I'll probably follow, to at least some extent, the season of WOD, since it'll no doubt be a good dance competition show. But I don't think it's going to get my enthusiasm, win my heart, or earn my loyalty (like I feel for SYTYCD). Too, I gather WOD is going to be airing twice weekly (if I've concluded accurately) - and I think that may become overkill to keep up with, considering there will also be a weekly installment of SYTYCD to follow. I tend not to be keen on following competition series that air more than one hour per week.

Genplant. I completely agree re: the sob stories. It gets old after a while. They even do it on the food show Chopped of all shows. It's so irksome sometimes because the person with the biggest sob story is usually chopped first rofl . Guess I'm jaded as well.

I hope Mary is louder than ever! I wonder who the third judge will be? Past winner/contestant? Past judge/choreographer? The only choreographer I don't want to see return is Luther Brown. I cant deal with that guy!! It would be a full circle moment if one of the past contestants were a judge. Mark comes to mind. I loved that guy. I cant remember which season he was in (4th comes to mind) but he went on to dance for Lady Gaga. He was wonderful and would have a lot to offer the contestants (advice wise).

Anyways, I think I will take a day or two to watch WOD. Now that I know SYTYCD is coming back, there is no rush for me to get in to this show.

One of us better start a new discussion on that SYTYCD thread!

I just now created a SYTYCD starter thread (delayed till now, in case you may have wanted to do so), on that show's TMDb board. Hopefully lots of TMDb members will tune in for the new season!

If I find SYTYCD entirely satisfying, I may abandon WOD part, or perhaps all, of the way. Although I appreciate and enjoy the talent of WOD, the format, and also the host and, to an extent, the judges, so far isn't clicking with me, and I'm not yet finding myself exactly caring.

Yes: Love Mary Murphy and all her loudness and hilarity, as well as for her big heart! She's a sweetheart. I prefer her over weekly guest judges (and also over Nigel, etc., for that matter) any day!

PS: The third SYTYCD judge will be actress Vanessa Hudgens.
