Discuss So You Think You Can Dance

For those of you who may not already be aware, So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD) is returning on the FOX network, on American t.v., on Monday, 12 June. And judge Mary Murphy (who I've always been a huge fan of on there, and missed after she ceased being on the show) is returning!

The Hot Tamale train is back in the station! WOO HOO!!! train2 grin

WOO HOO!!!! Cant wait!!! Thanks for starting the thread! Hopefully there will be some traffic.

I must say I am not that happy about the third judge (thanks for letting me know) I didn't know that it was announced. In any case, I will just focus on Mary M.

I agree with you about the third judge, that I don't understand why it's a person - Vanessa Hudgens - more so known as an actress than as a dancer. Hopefully she'll have some good opinions and insight.

WOOHOOO!!! Mary did not disappoint!! She is so much fun. I feel her passion for dance. Love when she gets emotional.

Vanessa Hudgens...no comment. I hope she grows on me.

I'm still watching it, but so far the dancers are great and I like how the show is not over produced. It just highlights the talent.

I just a short time ago watched last night's season opener episode, and it was a very strong start! I'm 100% onboard!

Wacky, sensitive Mary Murphy was just what I needed to make today complete! smile

Darn - now we've gotta wait a whole six more nights till the next installment.....

Plus, why is it only an hour? I thought they were usually two hour episodes.

So it will be on every Monday only? My DVR automatically programmed the next episode for Friday. Not sure what happened there. I need to fix it before I miss the next episode. I would be so pissed rofl

Okay, just watched Vanessa dancing with the Austin Powers look alike. It was cute!

I get the impression that, at least during airing of the preliminary rounds, it'll be Monday nights only. Hopefully once the Top 10 is announced it'll thereafter become 2 hours per week.

That all having been said, I actually don't know, one way or the other, how many hours per week it presently is. I didn't happen to take notice, at the end of the episode from last night, when they indicated the next show will air.

Okay, thank you.

Looks like the Friday episode is a repeat of the first episode.

I may watch that rerun then, in order to get another "fix". relaxed

I sat last season out because I didn't care for the younger generation theme, but I'm excited for this season. It sounds like they are going back to their roots, and I'm glad Mary is back. This show will always be my favorite dance show. I've been with it since the very beginning.

It's been one hour per week the last few seasons or so except for the audition rounds and the Season Finale which are two hours.

I was upset at first about last season, but it ended up being pretty good and (I think) the right person won.

I think I started watching the show in Season 2 and have been hooked ever since.

Mary Murphy is everything!!!!

Welcome to the thread grin

Piro and bgirl, at beginning of last season, when they indicated it would be a kids season, I was feeling decidedly not on board, though was surprised how excellent it wound up being, and that it wasn't at all lame or all "Gee Whiz"-y like I had been expecting, and that it didn't go too overboard with the "let's all be cute and adorable" aspect of things. There truly was a lot of real and remarkable, and also entertaining, talent to go around. By a couple episodes in, I was back to feeling completely onboard.

Yes: Now that Mary's back, the balance of the show feels the rest of the way back to how it ideally should be! I realize that Mary isn't everyone's cup of tea: Some people find her overly shrill and hard to take. But I've always been, and at all times remained, crazy about her, since day one (ongoing fan and follower, here, of the show since Season 1, Episode 1!), and found her to be the heart and soul of the show - not to mention also so hilariously zany that I always can't wait to see - or hear - what she's gonna come up with next! joy I wouldn't want to be Nigel's eardrums - or his left upper arm - though! He's gonna need to go on a very quiet vacation somewhere far, far away after the season concludes! lol

I was one of those people who couldn't stand Mary, but I really missed her after she was gone. I couldn't stand Jason Derulo as a judge and I didn't care for Paula either. I didn't realize what I had until it was gone. lol.

I'd forgotten all about that Paula was ever a judge on there. How quickly time flies and one forgets - considering she was a regular on there for years!

Yeah: I, too, never was impressed by Jason Derulo as a judge - nor, actually, by a great many of the guest judges that have passed through. Some good ones here and there, but many just seem to be either trying too hard to be funny (but in a type way that more so illustrates lack of having something actually useful to state), or like they really don't have well-formed opinions of their own so just are repeating whatever the more knowledgeable judge(s) have already commented. Not to mention various guest judges have only seemed to be on there in order to promote their t.v. series or whatever latest project.

At this point, after so many seasons now already "in the can," I'd like to see some of the former season winners (or otherwise Top 3 type finalists) be either regular or guest judges. They definitely have the talent, as well as the well-rounded knowledge, to be able to provide good constructive suggestions, observations, and general comments.

Great discussion! I was away and have not watched the second episode yet. Im looking forward to enjoying more incredible talent and the banter between Mary and Nigel. I love her one liners to him. They just roll off her tongue.

I agree with you, genplant. I wish some of the old contestants (perhaps only the top 3) would be judges. Perhaps it's a conflict in some way? I know they can choreograph. I suppose Nigel may want a more famous/well known face as a judge.

I didn't mind Paula as a judge. I thought she gave decent advice and was very positive and encouraging. Jason was probably just there for exposure. I don't know if it worked...haha
