Discuție Yu-Gi-Oh!

Item: Yu-Gi-Oh!

Language: en-US

Type of Problem: Bad_image

Extra Details: Most of the English images and all of the Swedish images belong in Yu-Gi-Oh: Dual Monsters (2000) instead, judging from the characters and monsters they portray. Also, the images that uses "Yu-Gi-Oh!" instead of "遊☆戯☆王" should be labeled Japanese, right?

No. Why do you think that ?

I’m not sure. Let’s say an image says “Chips”, so it’s English, not Spanish or French. And images shouldn’t be in multiple different languages, to avoid duplication or unnecessary promotion. But “Yu-Gi-Oh!” is romaji of a Japanese word, so it could fit into English or Spanish or French just as well as Japanese. The language images end up in should rely on their content alone. I recently changed a bunch of Baccano! images to Italian, despite that title being used worldwide. Is there a guideline for this? Maybe this website would prefer to default to English for romaji images?

The posters languages guidelines are here.

Oh, I’ve now learned that the “Baccano!” and “Yu-Gi-Oh!” posters should both be Japanese. Thanks

As indicated in the rule linked above, It will first depend of what else is included on the poster.

Yes, that’s true, I meant posters that literally only have “Baccano!” or “Yu-Gi-Oh!” as the text with no taglines or translations or distributor logos, since they’re the original show titles from Japanese

Unless there is a Japanese distributor or certification logo in an image using Latin script, there is additional Japanese text in an image using Latin script, or the original Japanese title uses Latin script (like EDENS ZERO), images that only use Latin script should generally not be labeled as Japanese, even if it's a romanized version of the title.

While "Yu-Gi-Oh!" is a romanization of the Japanese title, the original Japanese title is "遊☆戯☆王" not "Yu-Gi-Oh!".

I'm confused, are we indeed defaulting to English for romanized titles? Isn't that logo used internationally?

I understand that users of this website who use English find it odd that the posters they're familiar with aren't under English, but that's true for most other language users as well (Spanish, French, Portuguese, Russian...), which is why you often find duplicate posters. The truth is that this romanized title has been foreign/Japanese all along, which seems to me like a fact that should be accepted. That way, it's fair to users of this site in any language.
