That is probably why I do and don't understand the reactions towards ENT. What I do understand is people who love TNG and all the TNG era stuff being upset that they weren't going to get a continuation of the TNG -era. It was in many ways how people first reacted to TNG when it first aired(in particular from fans of TOS).On the other hand I do agree with the producers that the whole TNG era stuff and premise had been milked to the last drop (TNG,DS9,VOY one good TNG movie and one oké movie and two less than stellar movies).And being a fan of TOS I already had issues with the whole technobabble and non conflict between the main characters so I actually applauded the whole decision to go back in time.

But the what I don't understand was the extremeness of the reaction it was like the people had forgotten that the whole franchise had already been altered a number of times (even during the time that Roddenberry was still alive), first we had the changes made between the original pilot and the first episode of the first season and even the earlier episode of TOS tend to have quite a number of differences between them.Secondly the changes that were made when Trek was brought to the big screen with TMP.After that Meyer made significant changes when he made TWOK. Then came the most radical change when TNG was introduced which caused the first major outcry of Trekkies.During the various off shoots of TNG with DS9 they changed also quite a lot of things ,VOY was basically like TNG (but with even more dull characters and wasting good opportunities by bad decisions).Then the movie came and those seem to me an entirely different crew from the TNG crew (Picard in particular).

Then we get to ENT the producers were trying to make the biggest change since TNG and we get all the negative feed back.It might not be what you wanted but at least give it two or three seasons to ease out the problems and build up the main characters (like most of the various incantations of Trek with the exception of TOS) And it's not that Berman and Braga were the root of the problems as a matter of fact they had originally planned season 1 of ENT to take place on Earth where we sort of continue the story of Cochrane from FC and show the further development of the Warp engine (kinda what the episode "First Flight" showed) Season 2 was going to be when the NX -01 would go out into space and would have had a lot of episodes about exploring.How ENT eventually turned out is largely to blame on the head office because Star Trek had lost it unconditional support from the previous management they had for the larger part of a decade.The new management was a bit resentful toward the producers because of that plus they had no idea what SF and Star Trek was about.Most of the things that people complain about are a direct result of Head office interference(The Temporal Cold ,War, too advanced tech,more action and fighting,the Borg episode etc etc).That considering all this it is nothing short of a miracle that Berman & Braga managed to make one decent season one good season and two very very good seasons (where I would consider season 4 as probably the best season the Star Trek franchise ever produced)
