So maybe I'm crazy but I have a feeling that something changed in regards to the leanency there is for the poster ratios..? Recently I'm forced to crop or "ratio adjust" a lot of stuff which always feels terrible to do since it's manipulating official press material... And if that's actually the case can this change please be reverted - this shouldn't be encouraged and just takes time away from users (and if uploading multiple you even have to check which since it's telling you everything was uploaded successfully regardless)?
Here is an example of a back fill where this certainly is the case:

You're not crazy. The system used to accept posters with any ratio between 1:1.33 and 1:1.67. It was recently changed to only 1:1.5. It probably won't be changed back, but Travis seemed open to allow some popular ratios eg. 1:1.33, 1:1.5 and 1:1.67.
A "perfect" aspect ratio was always preferred. This one can easily be edited and definitely should be.

Ok - good to know. I hope @travis reconsiders though for the reasons above (I find it important to preserve most the designers intent - including use of space). Imho anyone using the images can adjust outliners themselves in the backend (scale, crop, color fill, etc.). If it stays I'm anticipating a lot more of the cheap color bar fill posters and probably different versions of edits to achieve the "golden" ratio (including stretching, autofill (fabricating)..) but that's just me painting black :).

good to know, however Im confused about the second sentence. do you mean Travis is saying to keep posters currently on the site that have those ratios or do you mean hes open to the idea of one day in the future allowing those specific/exact ratios (exactly 1:1.33 and 1:1.67) as acceptable ratios on the site again? (i.e. instead of allowing all- an infinite number of ratios- ratios between 1:1.33 to 1:1.67 - which is how it was before)?
yeah, I always thought the best solution would be for users to upload official posters/backdrops in their original size/aspect ratio and then just have some programming or editing functions on the site that allows it to do the cropping. but I dunno anything about technology and such so maybe thats a ridiculous idea somehow.

The second one. See the Bible: https://www.themoviedb.org/bible/image/59f7582c9251416e7100005f#59f758309251416e71000060
I'm not familiar with the technology, but cropping/resizing images with an editing program seems to give a much better results that whatever technology IMDb uses.

My thought was more that this change was maybe done to make it easier for third parties to deal with images (and that they instead should adopt their own methods of dealing with different sized images). On the poster list on the site the images are already displaying differently in the previews how what they actually are.
There might be a whole different motivation for doing this - I don't know. Too many duplicates because of ratios (which as I mentioned this probably won't fix if users have to go and edit things with different methods)? Easier to develop on TMDB itself with unified sizes (would require to throw out all the others)? Making the upload process harder (which won't improve the quality of images you'll be getting when users start using editing programs)?

FYI these three specific ratios should be working again.

Shouldnt this new change be reflected in the contribution bible and the upload poster pop-up thingy?
ie. "these are the following acceptable ratios.....etc."

Sure!
That one is up to Travis, but it's probably best to keep it as simple as possible. The pop-up thingy already has a link to the Image Bible.
Also, that reminds me that episodic backdrops and season posters still have the wrong minimum resolution.

Question, am I correct to assume that 1:1.33 and 1:1.41 are only alternatives if 1:1.5 is not possible? and that 1:1.41 is preferrable to 1:1.33 (since 1:1.41 is closer to the preferrable ratio of 1:1.5)?
