When I go to the main page of the movie A Ghost Story on the website here:
https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/428449-a-ghost-story
it says there are 4 current discussions for this movie. Take a look at the screenshot:
https://picload.org/view/dddoilil/numberofdiscussions.jpg.html
However, when I click on "Go to Discussions", there's only 1 discussion right now:
https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/428449-a-ghost-story/discuss
I remember that this mistake happened right after the new design was implemented - but then it was fixed. I think. And it's still correct for all the other pages that I recently looked at - just not this one.
I have no clue why?!? Weird ...

I don't know if it is the full explanation, but there at least one discussion hidden from public view (started by a suspended user).

Ah, I didn't think of that! That might be part of the explanation?
When you write "hidden from public" - does that also include discussions that were made private? Or could it be that there are also 2 more private discussions in this case?!?

Discussions made private by clicking on the "Make Private" button appears to me as locked and those are not counted e.g. the new Jumanji has a private content issue report. Discussions hidden from public view are either spam/problematic discussions we wanted to get rid of or discussions started by a suspended user. These discussions truly disappear from public view. We (mods) can read them if we have the link, but we can't see them in the discussion list. I found one via google, but I have no way to know if there are more.

Thanks for explaining! So, those can't be the problem ...
This sounds more than mysterious to me - maybe you're right and that's the reason for the bug?!?

By the way, I found another example:https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/292431-loveThe counter says "Discussions 5" - but when I click on "Go to Discussions", there are no general discussions, only 5 public content issue reports (and 1 hidden).Reply by Banana

I think content issue reports are always counted, though.

OT question: TMDb has a new design? For me, everything continues to look, and be, 100% identical to how it was throughout 2017. Is "the new design" now supposed to be experienced by everyone, or has it not yet been fully rolled out?

In my memory, some (most?) parts (especially tv section and account pages) of the TMDb website were relaunched exactly around the time when IMDb shut down the message boards around January/February 2017 or in steps afterwards. I think -> lately, my memory fails quite often, though ...
I also remember that I asked Travis to think about only showing discussions (minus issue reports) on the main pages - and that's how I became aware of the counting mistake back then. After I reported it, Travis fixed this - I wish I could find the old report, but I can't.
That's what I refer to here by "new design". But, like I wrote, my memory might play a trick or two on me.

Thanks for the explanation, Janar. I remember that things were quite in flux circa particularly February-April, when there was a lot of continuous gradual site evolution after the substantial invasion of IMDb exiles (of which, of course, I'm one thereof).
By the way, Congrats on your recently-bestowed mantle of Moderator!

Yes, true, and I remember that one of the first threads that I always read was this long updated summary written by lanz/lantz/lentz (?) about all the new features that were added over time.
I'm also one of the IMDb exiles - I registered here only a week before you! We should have a movie party next month, haha.
Oh, thank you very much, that's very kind of you!
I'm still a bit conflicted about this green ring around my yellow head, though! It looks ... weird? Nevertheless, I'll try my best as a mod to
earn all the trillions of dollars that Travis pays memake this place extra flamy!Reply by Banana

I barely remember it, but the website was REALLY different a year or so ago. Travis worked on so, so many new and improved features last year.
Another thing that can mess with the discussion count is content issue reports we move to other sections (website support, API support) for Travis to handle e.g. https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/74215

(and I'm glad I'm not the only one experiencing memory lo... nevermind ...)But, sadly, I'm under the impression that a lot of IMDb exiles left during 2017 -> is that just me?!?That's another possibility ...

Unfortunately that definitely clearly happened. I think many people wanted to experience an exact duplicate experience to what they were used to on IMDb, so ventured elsewhere seeking to find the right fit for them. I know that some members have said they use and post on an array of sites, though I've personally never done that as I consider "spreading the love" all over the place to be counterproductive.
Another thing that I know has turned some off who were formerly much more active (as they've commented it in TMDb threads that I've been on) is that the demographic on TMDb clearly seems to skew quite to rather youngish (like maybe primarily ages 20-45?), and to be primarily interested in horror, science fiction, action, and new/recent movies/t.v., but there being very little enthusiasm or show of interest/participation, here, in Classic films and old t.v. series.
I observe that apparent skewed-young site issue continuously (and by the way I'm not even remotely old - am in my fifties), as obviously my primary special area of enthusiasm (and input/involvement) is pre-1950s movies (plus their performers, plus the history of those decades), and it continues to be disappointing here, as normally few members seem to want to discuss anything from prior to mid-century. Yet about any horror, sci-fi, or action movies (or such t.v. series) lots of members will discuss a title extensively and enthusiastically. Back at "the other site" that - good current or recent activity - was exactly how also the message boards for all the specific Classic Films (no matter how old and obscure, including if foreign) and old t.v. series (including pre-1960s ones) titles, and their performers, used to be.
Also a lot of good, well-behaved, non-troll members continue to feel like something needed and important is missing here by there no longer being some sort of General Chat area. For someone like myself, there simply currently isn't anywhere to be able to effectively have certain type actual general, or genre-specific, movie discussions with anyone; minimal to no discussion success results if you try discussing such topics, for example about a particular genre, era, or aspect of film-making, on a specific movie or show's board; it will hardly be noticed, and will soon scroll out of sight on the latest-posts queue and become completely forgotten. I'm not at all suggesting that we resurrect General Chat, as that experiment clearly didn't work out.
