There is an article here in which composer Richard Gibbs writes in one paragraph:

"As an aside - composers will often ask for and get a credit in the main title and ads for a movie that reads 'music by', as in Music by Danny Elfman. It is usually a bit of an inaccurate credit, as it implies that all music in the film was composed by that person. That is rarely the case as most films also contain pre-existing songs licensed for use in the film. That's why you should always use Original Music Composer in this case on TMDb - a lot of contributors don't use it, though. The Music credit is for other pre-existing music used in movies/shows, like Mozart or Beethoven or such.
