The Movie Database-ondersteuning

Question in the title; a simple example:

I just edited the page of actress Kacy Owens here:

https://www.themoviedb.org/person/1512909-kacy-owens/edit?active_nav_item=primary_facts&language=en-US

She was born in "Landstuhl, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany". When I create this in the data field "Place of Birth", and save it, it says it was successfully saved. But when I go back to the page, it's missing. And then, when I go back to the data field, I can choose to add "Landstuhl, RhinelandPalatinate, Germany" - without the hyphen between "Rhineland" and "Palatinate".

So, are hyphens not allowed in this data field? Or, any idea what went wrong? octopus

Curious situation, Janar. I just now tried and also wasn't able to successfully add it. But I know that definitely hyphens can be successfully included in saved place names as I've successfully added hyphenated place names a number of times throughout the months. In fact, here's an example on a page I worked on just yesterday: https://www.themoviedb.org/person/21869-george-pal

UPDATE: I've just figured out what the deal is. I used my George Pal example as my test.

Indeed, I successfully saved Mr. Pal's hyphenated birthplace yesterday. So on Kacy Owens' Overview editing screen I (just strictly playing around) copy-and-pasted "CeglΓ©d, Austria-Hungary [now Hungary]" (Mr. Pal's birthplace) in the line for her birthplace (knowing I wasn't actually going to save it), just to see whether or how it would appear looking listed there. Sure enough, it appeared as an already existent birthplace option, but with no hyphen showing. Instead, "AustriaHungary" appears run together. So apparently solely the drop-down list of birthplaces just doesn't show the hyphen(s), though it/they (hyphen or hyphens) will appear if you select the option that shows two place name words run together.

Once I realized that, I tried selecting and saving the "Landstuhl, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany" that you've indicated for Miss Owens. Sure enough, the run-together drop-down option that shows "Landstuhl, RhinelandPalatinate, Germany", is the right option, as I selected it, then clicked on "Save", and now that birthplace does appear on her Overview page. relaxed

Ah, thank you so much for your help, @genplant29! kissing_cat I didn't think of that, and I'll try to remember that for the future. relieved

I'd never have figured it out, Janar, had you not posted this thread within hours after I knew I had done a successful edit that included a hyphenated place name. grin

Travis, if you happen to read this thread, can hyphens be made to start appearing included on the drop-down lists of place names that have already been created/stored? For example using the "Landstuhl, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany" example that Janar provided, that on the TMDb drop-down list is successfully (but invisibly) stored with the hyphen included, but that appears, instead, as "Landstuhl, RhinelandPalatinate, Germany"?

Now that I think about it, I've experienced this situation a small smattering of times throughout the months, and think I just gave up each time and concluded I simply wasn't able to add whatever.

Haha, what a coincidence! thumbsup_tone5

I second that. selfie

Yes, I've mentioned it before... Noord-Holland, Noord-Brabant and Zuid-Holland (provinces in the Netherlands) now all appear without the hyphens, and putting Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Netherlands won't let it save at all (or it saves, but without your edit)... :((((

SUCKS. It's the same for production companies/networks Z:

Do you mean that worked before in the past at some point here on TMDb? Because you write "now". Did it work before?

I honestly can't remember if I ever came across a hyphen before in any of those data fields to this point. I guess I just missed it and went on without noticing ... worried

Yes, it did work before, but right now every actress/actor that had Noord-Holland/Zuid-Holland or something (Amsterdam, The Hague etc) in their birthplace field, it appears now without the hyphen. Super strange!

Although, I just now checked this one, and there it does appear with a hyphen... O.o But I swear I've only seen non-hyphenated ones up until ... well, recently. Since a while at least.

But when you do want to add that same city, it only appears without the hyphen :/ screenshot

Maybe it is to block people from adding hyphens instead of comma's (,) between the city, province/prefecture/state and country. But this is an undesired side effect :|

Ah, thanks for clarifying! Yes, it's super strange, indeed ...

That would be a possible explanation; I was wondering about that, too ...

I just managed to create "Minami-Alps, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan" for Yuuichi Tsuchiya!

Marr, you did something neat there, that it never occurred to me is possible in a biography or a movie/series overview text: You placed a word in italics. Since the italics and bold options don't appear as clickable selections (like message board composition boxes have) atop the screen of those type things, it hadn't dawned on me that they can be manually added by including either a preceding/following set of underscores or a set of double asterisks. Great to know!

hhahaa, I noticed that one too, but it wasn't actually my intention to do that. It's the actual stylization of the word/title the group uses. It wasn't meant to be italics scream_cat

Another update,

it seems like I can create new hypenated city names, but cannot "fix" incorrent ones. For example, I couldn't add Rotterdam/Amsterdam, Zuid-Holland/Noord-Holland, Netherlands (the ZuidHolland/NoordHolland one was already there). But I could just now create Diemen, Noord-Holland, Netherlands. I also created one in Noord-Brabant earlier today if I remember correctly.

Heellllllppp @travis, we need to fix those non-hyphenated places :(
