The Movie Database Support

I have been using omdbapi for few months for getting IMDB and Metacritic information. But recently they have updated their API policy and I can't show IMDB and Metacritic ratings. Could anyone help me to get all ratings in one place? Thank you

@mitab86 IMDb and Metacritic charge a lot of money for access to their information and API's. They are a business and need the generate revenue. No one is allowed to just scrape and re-package the data, that's why OMDB had to remove it. It's why if anyone else does it, they'll be faced with the same problem. Plain and simple, it's stealing. If you want IMDb or Metacritic data, it would be best for you to pay for it.

@travisbell for getting information from IMDB I have found http://app.imdb.com/title/maindetails?tconst=tt4630562 but don't know whether its legal to use it or not. But I couldn't find Metacritic and rotten tomato free api

Re: the IMDb link you posted, right at the top:

For use only by clients authorized in writing by IMDb. Authors and users of unauthorized clients accept full legal exposure/liability for their actions.

Re: Metacritic and RT, there is no free service. They are pay only. Anything you come across unless you're a paying customer will be against their TOS. They generate real and substantial revenue from these services, they're not going to knowingly let anyone re-package the data for free. RT used to provide some of their service for free but started locking it all up a year or two ago. The days of getting that data for free are gone.

@travisbell It's no doubt that TMDB is a great collection of movies and series information. But is there any possibility that TMDB will be adding IMDB and Metacritic score also to its database in its near future.

I don't think I have any plans to add that data, no. We are however considering a new service that would help bridge the gap that I'm calling The Consensus. I have not moved ahead with this just yet, but the idea will likely get executed on in the next little bit. My goal is to work more closely with the critics and try to get some of our own data that way.

The Consensus looks exciting. Good luck guys. Hope new features and services will be added in the future

So how do websites like Movieo.me have IMDb, RT and Metacritic ratings on their site? Would they be paying for that?

Yes, paying for it or scraping it illegally. Obviously I can't say for certain (and I am not trying to say one way or the other). I don't think IMDb cares so much about showing their rating (for them it's more about the data, but do not quote me or trust me on that, they still prohibit anything but personal use) but RT and Metacritic definitely do. That's what you pay the big $$$ for.

Think they'd care if it was just for a small college project? :P

I can't say, you'll have to ask them that wink

Haha makes sense, thanks man! Love the work you do grin

Travis, FYI, in my browser (Chrome) that Consensus announcement is cut off by the "Sign Up To Become A Critic" block below it. All I see of the first part is:

"Who will be contributing to the Consensus? We're looking for people who share one thing in common—their love for movies and TV shows. Whether you're"

Hey @pt100 I haven't officially launched that so I am not overly worried. I built that in January and then the whole February thing happened and I haven't looked at it since. weary Unfortunately, I do not have time to finish the marketing page nor actually build it right now. It's a feature that I am incredibly excited to see go ahead but I am limited by time and right now I have negative time.

That might work, as long as it ends up being more like Metacritic than Rotten Tomatoes, where it seems that everyone is a critic and the huge number of no-name/mediocre ones drown out the professionals. I'm looking forward to seeing your final version.

Just stumbling onto this forum in 2018. The Consensus sounds fantastic as I'm assuming it will be public. That said, @travisbell - do you have any means that we could donate a few bucks if you are doing all of this yourself?
