I saw the rules here: https://www.themoviedb.org/documentation/editing/images
But, there is no real info about what we can use as an actor portrait. Do we source the images from the internet, or is taking them from a movie (via screenshots) fine?

Ideally, the performers should not be in character. Always use a picture from a photoshoot or a red carpet type of event when a good picture is available online. This is the kind of pictures we want for actor portraits.
Do you have an example?

I didn't originally intend this to be an example, but...

I'm adding a bunch of movies from my cheapy multipacks and this scene struck me as funny for some reason. A lot of these low budget movie actors are just wearing normal clothes. It's often very difficult to find pictures of these actors outside of movie screencaps. (I'd use closeup shots, of course.)
I ask because I've seen both 'red carpet' and movie stills in profiles while editing movies, so I wanted to be sure these were fine. Thanks.

I think we could bend the rules a little bit for such movie actors, but my main concern is image quality. We generally prefer to have no image than a lesser quality image. It would have to be closeup screencaps with a good light and a good background and only if they look good as a 300x450 profile image. But let's see what the other mods think. @lineker?

I'm generally negative, but let's see some example pics so we know exactly what we are talking about here.

In my experiece screengrabs never live up to the real thing, but yeah, some examples would be great!

Something like this, just cropped: http://i.imgur.com/LSOKEVn.png - this is Tomas Goros.
Sadly, a lot of my movies have awful compression (as is the norm with these cheapy multipacks), so I would only do this once in a while. This is from a Bluray, so it's not that bad. :p

I'm away from home and not using my own computer, but to me the quality is good enough (maybe because it's from a quality source). It would of course have to be cropped and added as a .jpg in the end.

I agree. It won't be mistaken for a real picture, but I think the quality is surprisingly okay and it doesn't look too much like a character.

That example is much better than the twitter one, and looks indeed good :) If you add more like those I'd see nothing against it.
