The Movie Database Support

Would offering something similar be something tmdb would want to do? It seems very well placed to pinch the rejected user base.

Just a thought. Moderation headache might mean it's more trouble than it's worth of course

"Basically, we only allow instructive and constructive discussions."

LOL, it would be pointless and impossible to moderate. Every type of discussion should be allowed even trolling. Only hate speech should be moderated otherwise it isn't a discussion forum.

That's just my opinion, but imo one of the reason the IMDb forums don't work is because the few good discussions are buried under a load of crap. I'm sure free-for-all would attract more users and get more page views, but I don't think it's beneficial in terms of users experience.

edit: another thing to consider, pissed off users can mess with data.

I suggest a new, automatically enforced mechanism: Everyone is allowed one (and only one) original post in a thread. Any other posts must be to replies to the original post. That first post should be well thought out - since you only get one. If no-one responds to the trolls they are effectively silenced. Such a mechanism would improve this thread already.

A. (if this is too draconian, perhaps good posters earn extra posting privileges through reputation or replies)

LOL, the loophole is two trolls constantly replying to each other.

There is no point in creating a smart-forum or a Nazi-forum. Go to Reddit for that.

It was the seed of an idea, not a complete implementation description. Effective human moderation has costs. To avoid those costs, you use automation. To say there is no point because it's not perfect is defeatism, and that gets you nowhere. You should save the word 'Nazi' for something worthy of the description.

@banana_girl a private message chance for mods would be great, that could be a better way to reach each other more quickly

I want to add my voice for the record: Just joined this site to check it out after learning of IMDB's crackdown on their message boards. I'm a big movie buff, and I really enjoy looking through the discussions and seeing what other people are saying, reading through movie trivia, chatting with others concerning the movie, etc. The IMDB trolls never bothered me, and neither did the "disgusting comments". Its easy enough to move on when you find something that bothers you in the Discussions. Frankly, if IMDB's same system were implemented here, I'd consider moving over to this site exclusively. Otherwise, there really isn't much to keep me here.

most of the film boards on IMDB are not worth anyones time. and it will be a major pain moderating them. i think that time could be wiser spent on here

I agree with banana_girl, if implemented, new mods dedicated to the social aspect would come in handy. I really like the idea of more social websites, and on-site private messaging.

For the IMDb users though, I can recommend Trakt - for discussions about movies, tv shows and episodes. It's focusing more on the social aspect. And I think letterbox is good for just movies. Although I have no experience with it.

have you spelled 'Trak' correctly? i couldn't find it.

letterboxd is great

Whoops, missed a -t there, haha!

thanks! :-)

@Alrescha

I can use the word Nazi as I please. You can't dictate its usage. Judging by both of your posts you should be the least likely to have an input on a new forum and if you are the typical themoviedb.org user then I have already given up on this website LOL.

so you see this discussion is a goood example for what we don't want to have here, I think

PLEASE TMDB GO FOR IT! It's one in a lifetime chance.

Let take the data, invite the users... It's a matter of hours before all disapears.

Someone at TMDB make the decision! P L E A S E
