This is (also) something that has been bugging me for a while. There is a prominent focus on a show's creator in the TV database but you will not find any clear definition of that role (aka wiki). What for me is even worse however is that it's not something that every show has or cares about.

Just going by Wikipedia you will already get multiple possible "creator" roles https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television_program_creators... In the DB I saw all kinds of usage of the field; be it the showrunner (which can change), the author of the first/couple episodes, the author of the source material or even the production company. What is it now and should the field really be this "exclusive" for TV?

Huh, and why would Aggretsuko be the exception? I did not see a "Created by" credit and if it actually had then I would be curious to see what the Japanese version would read open_mouth .

I thought it said that on Netflix or an press release, but I could be wrong.. I'm not sure anymore :( but it doesn't mention it in the credits indeed (I just checked again. only written and direction)

Perhaps I mistaken a sentence like "written and directed by Japanese creator Rareko" or something. thinking

I think the creator is just the person who is specifically credited that way -- "Created by XXX" or "Developed by XXX", or list that on the official website.

What about if that credit appears on a film? Do I add it as a "Creator" credit on the Crew section? There is currently no "developer" credit available for movies. Or should the "story developer" credit be used? If that's the case could that alt. credit be added here (this is what I use to chechk for AKAs in credits)?

It's been four years and the field is still wrongly used around the site and the bible entry is indeed the limited role credit. Will the field every be merged into regular credits and shows instead spotlight other creatives involved in the.. creation?

The creator field should be used for individuals credited as "created by" or "creator" in the opening credits. Only people. No companies or networks.

If a television series do not have a creator (e.g. book adaptations), the individuals credited as "developed by" or "developed for television by" can be added as the creators.

The creators of a scripted series often are the main writers of the pilot episode. However, the pilot writers should not be added to the "Created By" field unless they are credited with "created by" or "developed by".

"Showrunners" should also not be added as creators unless they are properly credited as such.

Neither should the creators of a preexisting work (e.g. a book, a movie or another TV series) unless they are properly credited as the creators of the series.

Hey @sp1ti,

I've created a new ticket for this here. No guarantees about timing, it's been hard for me to find any time for feature work this year. Hopefully I'll get TMDB back into a more regular cadence in the coming months.
