Slovak musicologist Agata Schindlerová, now settled in Dresden, has spent years mapping out the forgotten destinies of Jewish musicians whose lives were irrevocably marked by the advance of nazism. Scenes from the lives of several of them are portrayed in the film In Silence (ballet dancer Alice Flachová, pianist and conductor Karol Ebert, composer, conductor and director of the Dresden Theatre Arthur Chitz, pianist Edith Kraus, and the vocal ensemble Comedian Harmonists), which draws a sharp contrast between the protagonists’ carefree existence working and making music during the pre-war era and the subsequent severe upheaval in their lives brought on by the proliferation of nazism.

Their common language is Fado, a traditional style of music that talks about the daily struggle of living. With the lyrics of fado songs taking us through the story, the film explores the relationship between fado singers and the ever-changing world around them.

Although the situation in Afghanistan is improving, playing music is still unacceptable in the eyes of many, especially when it comes to young women. The film directed by Lucia Kašová depicts their desires, dreams and preparation for performances. During the tour in Slovakia, when they get to the former borders of the communist bloc, the symbolism of the Iron Curtain moves the Afghan story to a completely different perspective.

The man looked around, picked up a shovel and, without any questions, began to dig his own grave. Such a calm behavior under the circumstances raised doubts about one of the bandits.

Silenced for more than 50 years, a group of elderly women in Indonesia decided to share the country’s forgotten history to the young generation through singing. The women formed a choir group that sings songs written inside prisons by those who were arrested and sentenced for years without any single trial. The singing and sharing has helped them heal their trauma as well as connecting them with an eager young audience.

This silent film depicts two letters written in 2006 following a military coup in Thailand that ousted then prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
