Slovak musicologist Agata Schindlerová, now settled in Dresden, has spent years mapping out the forgotten destinies of Jewish musicians whose lives were irrevocably marked by the advance of nazism. Scenes from the lives of several of them are portrayed in the film In Silence (ballet dancer Alice Flachová, pianist and conductor Karol Ebert, composer, conductor and director of the Dresden Theatre Arthur Chitz, pianist Edith Kraus, and the vocal ensemble Comedian Harmonists), which draws a sharp contrast between the protagonists’ carefree existence working and making music during the pre-war era and the subsequent severe upheaval in their lives brought on by the proliferation of nazism.

Sometimes when you stay alone, silence becomes unbearable.

94 years old, Russia. An old BMW drove into an abandoned precast concrete plant. Two men in leather jackets went to the trunk, took out a shovel, a man and his knapsack. One of them indicated the place, the second loaded the Makarov. Only the word "Dig" slipped out in an orderly tone. The man looked around, picked up a shovel and, without any questions, began to dig his own grave. Such a calm behavior under the circumstances raised doubts about one of the bandits.

Silenced for more than 50 years, a group of elderly women in Indonesia decided to share the country’s forgotten history to the young generation through singing. The women formed a choir group that sings songs written inside prisons by those who were arrested and sentenced for years without any single trial. The singing and sharing has helped them heal their trauma as well as connecting them with an eager young audience.

The film is an intimate portrait of a woman who feels exposed to strange glances.
