September 1941. Um seinem Sohn Kostya die harten Kämpfe an der Front zu ersparen, schickt Oberst Gorelow den Kadetten zum Einsatz auf das Lastschiff 752, mit dem russische Soldaten und Zivilisten aus der Blockade von Leningrad evakuiert werden sollen. Kostja stimmt seinem Vater nur zu, da dies die einzige Möglichkeit ist, bei seiner Verlobten Nastya zu bleiben, die ihn auf das Schiff begleitet. Obwohl der alte Frachtkahn in keinem guten Zustand ist, ordnet Kostjas Vater die Truppen an, es mit mehr als 1.000 Menschen zu beladen. Niemand ahnt, welch schreckliches Schicksal die Menschen nur wenige Stunden später ereilen wird: Als sie auf See in einen heftigen Sturm geraten, tauchen am Himmel plötzlich feindlichen Luftstreitkräfte auf, die das Schiff attackieren.

Lenin gilt als Anstifter der russischen Oktoberrevolution 1917. Doch so ganz stimmt das nicht. Wenn man die Oktoberrevolution von 1917 genau nachvollzieht, ergibt sich sogar eine ganz andere Geschichte. Lenin erscheint von den Ereignissen überwältigt und autoritätslos gegenüber seinen Truppen. Plötzlich hat er nur noch wenig mit dem Helden gemein, als der er heute gefeiert wird.

Im Jahre 1941 prallt die bis dahin fast reibungslos rollende Invasion der Wehrmacht auf die russische Metropole Leningrad, das vormalige St. Petersburg, und damit erstmals auf ein Hindernis, dass sich nicht so einfach wegräumen lässt. Hitler befiehlt die Belagerung der Stadt, und die ausländischen Korrespondenten suchen das Weite. Bis auf Kate Davies aus England, die private Gründe hat, zu bleiben. Kate freundet sich mit der jungen Parteisoldatin Nina an, wird von dieser vor Stalins Geheimdienst beschützt und erlebt anschaulich die Schrecken des Krieges.Die Belagerung Leningrads durch die deutsche Wehrmacht dauerte fast drei Jahre, schrieb unzählige Horrorgeschichten und kostete mehr als einer Millionen Stadtbewohnern das Leben. Hier bildet sie die aufregende Kulisse für ein dramatisches Abenteuer und die Geschichte einer besonderen Frauenfreundschaft.

After a ten year long stay in West Germany, Max returns to the Soviet Union to visit his deadly ill father in Leningrad. There he finds a friend in a man who calls himself Igor and he begins a love-affair with the deafmute Lena. Around Max' relationship to his father, Igor and Lena, losely held episodes give a many fasetted portrait of Leningrad and its inhabitants. In the eyes of the returning Max, the city is at once well-known and foreign. Lyrically saturated images and sophisticated editing contributes to making the film an expressive description of a changing city.

In 2005, Sophie Nys travelled to Ulan-Ude, the capital of the mountainous Buryat Republic in eastern Siberia, to film the largest existing statue of Lenin, the founding father and first General Secretary and Premier of the Soviet Union. Only the statue’s monumental head was completed, and we see it from all angles, close up and further away, in Nys’ grainy super 8-film. Beyond the subject’s surly, infinite gaze, life in the town’s main square takes its daily course — one that no longer corresponds with the utopian vision of Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov.
