Discuss John George

I've been a fan of John George for as long as I can remember, though never actually was aware of what his name was until recent years.

Mr. George was a "little person" actor who appeared in a gazillion different movies, including many of the very biggest name brand ones. Nearly always he went uncredited. Regardless, he a number of times got small, though still somehow quite conspicuous, roles, that ensured you'd readily notice him. Of course, too, he was always immediately recognizable and someone you'd notice simply due to his distinctive look.

I'm a huge fan of very old movies, and Mr. George's appearances certainly do span the gamut of years, from Silents of the mid 1910s all the way through films, and also t.v. series, of into the early 1960s. In Silent films (of the 1920s, which seems to have been, along with through the first half or so of the 1930s, when he was particularly in his career heyday) he was much more likely to sometimes appear actually credited, though come the talkies era I don't believe he hardly ever was.

John George was a good actor and had the sort of face that effectively and believably conveyed whatever it was that needed to be conveyed: He had a real depth and soulfulness to his face. Particularly in Silent films, that were all about visual conveyance of everything, that was a real asset.

I'll never forget him in his role as Kolb, one of Fu Manchu's assistants, on the TV show "The Adventures of Dr. Fu Manchu".

It's amazing how long his career was, and how many readily-still-remembered great films he appeared in. In Silent films he typically got a good amount of feature screen and "face" time, as he was a contract regular at MGM, and superlative director Rex Ingram, in particular, employed him often and quite (for in small roles and bit parts) prominently.

Since it's been 2-1/2 years since this thread last saw the light of day on the latest-posts queue, I'm giving it a bump, for in case anyone may be interested who either wasn't here or didn't see it the first time around.

I remain a fan of Mr. George. His films that are represented in my personal collection (the following collected not because he's in them, but because they're good movies worth owning) are The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (1921), The Prisoner of Zenda (1922), Scaramouche (1923), The Red Lily (1924), and The Black Cat (1934). The mid 1920s definitely was his peak career period, when Mr. George was getting his best featured parts, typically with at least one close-up (often multiple).

Perhaps someone will find some of the following interesting, that's from a TMDb Content Issues report I submitted back in Sept. 2018 after I genealogically researched John George, presented his correct information on his TMDb profile page, and was requesting that the content be locked (which it then was and remains):

I quite extensively researched Mr. George last year, via available original records...that exist, and he, himself,...indicated his 4' 10" height....Also he personally signed his name Tufei Filhela. I mention these things as I realize that IMDb inaccurately states that his name was Tufei Filthela and that he was 4' 2". Also I realize that Wikipedia states his name was Tufei Fatella and that he came to the U.S. "around 1911". (The definite exact year was 1912 - in the month of April, to be specific - per Mr. George's own reporting of his immigration arrival details.)....Details I [have] presented are per the ultimate reliable sources: Mr. George himself and official records.

His TMDb bio reads (excerpts follow):

4' 10" Syria native John George, who came to the United States in 1912 via France, was an actor who appeared in numerous films beginning in 1916....Mr. George's original name was Tufei Filhela; on his 1925 United States citizenship naturalization Declaration of Intention document, he signed his name "Tufei Filhela known as John George". His surname was neither Filthela nor Fatella, as today sometimes is claimed.

Have you ever tried to correct the information on the other sites, e.g. Wikipedia?

Nah. I leave them to their own devices. wink

I've several times, during the last few years (since joining TMDb and becoming a data contributor here), found definite glaring dates/places/names details errors on IMDb or/and Wikipedia, for various old-time actors, actresses, crew members, etc. who I was doing data entry regarding here. When I compared IMDb and Wiki, discovered certain details clashed one site to the next, I then personally researched the person, in old documents and public records, to see if I could determine the correct facts. I've many times found IMDb or/and Wikipedia to be in error. (Generally Wikipedia fares better with accuracy than does IMDb, where biographical and locational details are concerned.)

When you speak of 'old documents and public records', do you mean those available on internet?

Yep - via a combination of documents and records sites. For deceased people who died long enough ago for their records to no longer be privacy protected, it's possible to find all sorts of info. Much of the time it's images of the old hand-written or typed original documents, anything from birth, marriage, divorce, death, burial, immigration, military enlistment, draft registration, US citizenship, censuses, etc.

That's incredible if you can find all that, especially the very old papers, on internet.

It always all depends on the decedent and the location. Fortunately California records for people of old-time Hollywood (by which I mean Los Angeles County) tend to be quite expansive. If you luck upon someone who lived there for a number of years and got married (sometimes multiple times), appeared in multiple censuses (which only through the 1940 census is so far publicly available), registered for the WWI and/or WWII drafts, and died there, you can find a bounty of info about them. People who were born or died in states other than California, I also search for their records in those states.
