Eduardo De Filippo (Naples, 24 May 1900 - Rome, 31 October 1984), was an Italian playwright, actor, director, screenwriter and poet. Considered one of the most important Italian theatrical authors of the twentieth century, he was the author of numerous theatrical works which he himself staged and interpreted and, later, translated and performed by others also abroad. A prolific author, he also worked in the cinema with the same roles covered in the theatrical activity. For his artistic merits and contributions to culture, in 1981, he was appointed senator for life by the President of the Republic Sandro Pertini and was awarded two honorary degrees in literature from the University of Birmingham in 1977 and from the University of Rome La "Sapienza" in 1980. It was also proposed for the Nobel Prize for literature [2]. Eduardo is still today, together with Luigi Pirandello, Dario Fo and Carlo Goldoni, one of the most appreciated and represented Italian theater authors abroad He was born in Naples on May 24, 1900. Natural son of the actor and playwright Eduardo Scarpetta and of the theater dressmaker Luisa De Filippo, Eduardo and his brothers were recognized as children by their mother whose surname they took De Filippo. Eduardo Scarpetta, married on March 16, 1876 to Rosa De Filippo, with whom he had three children (Domenico, Maria and Vincenzo), had an extra-marital relationship with his granddaughter Luisa De Filippo (daughter of Luca, brother of Rosa De Filippo) from which Titina, Eduardo and Peppino were born.

Figlio naturale di Eduardo Scarpetta, cominciò, come il fratello Peppino e la sorella Titina, a recitare giovanissimo. Nel 1932 costituì con i fratelli una compagnia del Teatro Umoristico che fu subito acclamata in tutta Italia e durò fino al 1945. Cominciava a farsi conoscere anche come autore, con testi di una comicità amara e sostanzialmente tragica, come Sik-Sik l'artefice magico (1930), Natale in casa Cupiello (1931), Chi è cchiù felice 'e me (1932), Non ti pago! (1940), dove il dialetto non costituiva un limite al discorso drammaturgico. Passava intanto anche al cinema facendosi soprattutto ammirare ne Il cappello a tre punte (1934, di Mario Camerini). Nel 1945 si staccò dal fratello e costituì il Teatro di Eduardo, presentandovi le sue commedie più mature nelle quali, attraverso la lezione di Pirandello, l'autore si pone interrogativi inquietanti sulla condizione dell'uomo contemporaneo: Napoli milionaria (1945), Questi fantasmi!e Filumena Marturano (1946), Le voci di dentro (1948), Bene mio e core mio (1955), Sabato, domenica e lunedì (1959), Il sindaco del rione Sanità (1960), Gli esami non finiscono mai (1974), ecc… Poeta indiscusso, cantore della povertà, Eduardo possedeva le capacità di indagare i sentimenti degli umili decifrandoli con tratti densi di sfumature, in bilico tra farsa e tragedia. Un messaggio a tal punto universale da aver reso il suo teatro esportabile in Gran Bretagna come in Russia, nonostante fosse così decisamente influenzato dal dialetto. Di alcune delle sue commedie diresse e interpretò anche la versione cinematografica, con gusto neorealistico e risultati di rilievo specie per Napoli milionaria (1950) e Filumena Marturano (1951), cui seguì, nel 1953, Napoletani a Milano. Concluse la sua attività di scrittore traducendo in versi napoletani La tempesta di Shakespeare. Nel settembre 1981 il Presidente della Repubblica Sandro Pertini lo nominò senatore a vita.
