Taylor Schilling se narodila 27. 7. 1984 v Bostonu, Massachusetts, USA. Jejími rodiči jsou Patricie a Robert J. Schilling. Taylor vyrostla ve Waylandu kde také odmaturovala na střední škole.

S hereckou kariérou začala na střední škole, kde se objevila v divadelní produkci. Poté nastoupila na univerzitu Fordham, kde získala titul v umění. Následovně nastoupila na univerzitu v New Yorku. Chtěla zde pokračovat v herectví ale hned ve druhém ročníku odešla. Pracovala také jako chůva na Manhattanu.
