I love this movie, particularly how both Pryor and Murphy played their roles straight-up. This was not a vehicle for them to reprise their stand-up comedy personas; rather, they actually acted straight roles.
When we saw a movie featuring Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy, I'll bet most people likely had the expectation that they would be rip-roaring comedians? And we kept waiting for some hilarity from their characters, which never came; hence, some would be disappointed vs. their expectations.
I'm not sure they got the lingo of the 20s - doesn't seem to have been sufficient style to the dialog, sounded rather too modern...but, for what it did do, I'm quite willing to give it a pass here.
