Michael is the younger son of a middle-class family, a strong-willed and free-thinking fellow, who is off in some distant country fighting for a revolutionary cause. Everyone in the family writes to him, describing the events of their lives, as they drift into a kind of conventionality which would perhaps have horrified them earlier. Only Michael’s girlfriend Mara, the mother of his child, retains her independence, even though it is through the help of Michael’s increasingly conventional friends and family that she survives.

Après les émeutes étudiantes de 68, Michele quitte sa famille bourgeoise pour Londres, mais reste en contact avec sa mère et ses sœurs, dans une correspondance où il fait la lumière sur les différents personnages qui ont marqué sa vie, notamment Mara, qui prétend avoir eu un enfant de lui. Un jour, elles apprennent la mort de Michele.

Michael is de jongste zoon uit een gezin uit de middenklasse, een wilskrachtige en vrijdenkende kerel, die in een ver land is om te vechten voor een revolutionaire zaak. El personaje nos va presentando, así, al resto del reparto, mientras se debate entre una mujer tradicional, aterrorizada ante los cambios -la madre-, y una joven inquieta, preparada para todo lo que se le ponga por delante -la novia-.
