Decent thriller, falls apart in the end, but my god is this a subject for our times. This is basically Cuckold: The Movie. I can not imagine myself loving someone enough to put up with that kind of emotional punishment and public humiliation. But the movie makes sure not to paint her in too negative of a light for getting stuffed by random dudes in the family home while her husband and kid are around. That's peak 2022.

That would be weirdly hypocritical of the filmmakers to depict her in a negative light, at least in one sense anyway. Let's not pretend that the allure of watching a naked Ana De Armas get boned in every way imaginable by multiple partners isn't what's drawing viewers in. Both male and female viewers alike

I'm all for seeing Ana De Armas naked, but story wise this is still about a dude standing by while his wife gets plowed by a string of men and the husband basically putting up with it while it's rubbed right in his face.

If this were flipped around the guy openly cheating on his wife would absolutely be portrayed as a scumbag. At no point does Ana's character express even a shred of remorse for what she's doing, that would probably be seen as "slut shaming". But at no point does Affleck's character cheat, because cucks don't even the playing field by revenge cheating.

I couldn't help but think about Gone Girl where Affleck's character is a cheater in that one and he gets accused of murdering his wife and has his name dragged through the mud and his lover turns on him and he's trapped in a marriage with a psycho, all because he cheated. It just speaks to our society where a woman cheating is okay and a man cheating is a capital crime.

SOME MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW:

A very strange, and in my opinion utterly dreadful movie. Ben Affleck indeed stars as the simp or cuckold who watches his wife get boned by just about everyone in the movie and is shown silently just looking at the act from the shadows time after time and sighing. This family drama brings out the worlds worst serial killer in him. He apparently commits premeditated murders in just about the dumbest way imaginable despite them portraying him as some kind of an intelligent guy. I mean the guy drowns one dude at some party with dozens(?) of possible witnesses who could come to the pool at any minute. Apparently forcibly drowning someone leaves no visible marks of struggling in this universe either. This masterfully executed crime of the century is only topped when he picks up another boyfriend of his wife's from some random street. Now I imagine he would've been caught on numerous surveillance cameras alone, but this shouldn't be much of an issue when this genius also decides to dump his victim in some shallow pond and is later surprised when the body pops up despite his bright idea of using his own belt to tie some rocks to him. This again is topped off by this silent assassin picking up his victim's wallet and prominently portraying it in his evil lair full of escargots. Now not to be outdone by this Napoleon or Einstein of crime we have amateur detective writer who catches our killer with the dead body and goes off with his driving like a maniac while he is being chased by our killer on a mountain bike. Now instead of just calling the 911 or leisurely driving to the nearest police station with the killer in tow this genius starts texting his manager or something and drives off a cliff. Worlds worst serial killer goes back home where wife now knows he is a killer, but is apparently content on this arrangement of theirs where she has sex with anything that moves and his simp husband kills them afterwards. Such a happy and sensible ending.

It's adapted from a book written in 1957 so they apparently did very little to update a lot of the plot points to be more convincing in the current era of technology. The thing is I would be willing to suspend my disbelief on some of the murder plot stuff IF I cared about the characters, which I didn't.

No one respects a man who tolerates letting his wife get plowed all over town by every dude she sees, especially not in his own house and especially especially while he's in the other room reading to his daughter. Jesus Christ my contempt for Ben Affleck's character was unfathomable. Like, a thot is going to be a thot, but he had the choice to kick her ass to the curb or at least go bang a bunch of other women. Maybe if they had cast an uglier dude it might have been a little more believable.

Man, I was going to get Hulu for a month just to watch this. But yeah, I'll pass. Wait until it's on a free service. Too bad, lots of talent involved

There was a chance to go for dark comedy in this scenario, by having Affleck pretend to ignore his wife's infidelity, on account of him recognizing the perils that men often face in family court at the moment. Adrian Lynne has never really done funny though

Hollywood will NEVER show the horrors men suffer through family court. They will just paint the man as being some kind of evil villain or idiot. They're not about to remake Kramer vs Kramer (unless they reverse the genders). When I was a kid I still remember seeing Liar Liar and that scene where Jennifer Tilly plays a total monster who gets custody of her kids from her husband who was a good dad.

The only real solution to this movie was murder. Basically Gone Girl but where he actually did kill his wife, but gets away with it.

You don't know what he really feels till you experience the same thing with the same personality (disorder or not). I have experienced Affleck's character experience in a minor way. My ex had several (male) "best friend" and she prefer spent the majority of her freetime with him instead of me and she always talk about him when she spent her time with me even saying that I was not allowed to have the same behavior with her (not a chance that it ever happened since I hadn't any female friend). After some months the "best friend" disappeared (change place, move for work or find a gf, I swear I didn't kill them) and then another one arrives. Watching this movie make me remember those times (actually 12-15 years ago) and I feel Affleck's character a lot (without the murder stuff but.with all the depressed/rage mood). That's why I can tell you that this movie is believable as a cuckold story, less as a serial killer's one.

I totally understand that some guys just get hung up on a woman and they refuse to let her go either because they fear of that loss or fear that they won't be able to get a better woman, and given the book was written in the 50s(?) I totally understand it from that perspective, but this is not the 50s anymore.

I've learned that if a woman really likes and respects her man, she will not embarrass him. Embarrassing him would be like embarrassing herself. If you're with a woman and she chooses to embarrass you in this way, whether she is conscious of it or not, you have to let her go, because she's already left you.

Women are not that hard to figure out. Men make the mistake of thinking women act in a logically straight-forward way like men do and they don't. Women act on their feelings and they can not help but project those feelings in the way they talk, act and dress. If your woman is flirting/hanging out with other men and she knows you don't like it, she's doing it on purpose to get a reaction out of you or to humiliate you. Some men stupidly put up with these tests, but smart men walk away. Women only treat their men like this when they don't respect them and know there won't be any consequences for doing so. You can't force a woman to do what you want, but you can always dump her.

That said I don't fault the movie for presenting a guy being humiliated by his wife so openly, I fault it for not giving the guy a satisfying character arc where he overcomes that weakness. In the book he kills her, because that's what guys like this typically do. Or at the very least he should have left her, but instead he kills for her and goes back to her and she suffers no consequences, and neither does he after murdering innocent people. The dudes he killed didn't make marriage vows to him, she did. I just hope dudes don't watch movies like this and think it's okay to forgive your cheating wife/girlfriend.

This is why Will Smith has become the joke of Hollywood, because his wife openly cheated on him and humiliated him and he put up with it and the torment drove him to do something stupid in public. Don't be Will Smith.
