I'm curious to see what others think about this. The underlying social commentary, the appeal to a specific demographic and the loyal following that it has maintained all earn it this label.

Understood cult as a smaller but loyal fan base. Sequels dropped the fan base yet continued the story.

I always thought "cult films" were films that were generally despised by the general public but maintained a small devoted fan base. The Matrix was generally well received by all.

cult movies were not necessarily despised by the general public as much as they went unnoticed, but for a few enthusiastic fans...
it was common for cult movies to emerge on VHS through rentals... etc...
i doubt thaf it is a well defined term anyway...

You are right. Not necessarily despised but ignored or had a very small box office success if any. Blade Runner is a good example.

No not a cult classic but the movie from which it "burrowed " a lot of it's ideas (and sets) Dark City is.

Agree with cult classic films as becoming popular over time.
Matrix was more like big impact in pop culture and definitely defines late 90s culture. Fashion, rise of internet, Nokia phones and film style. I remember after watching this, Charlie's Angels & Mission Impossible came out and most fight/action scenes were in slow motion lol. And the ads in TV were mostly spoofing Matrix, even chocolate biscuits!
