In no particular order (except for the first one):

Another Thin Man

The Women

Dark Victory

The Wizard of Oz

The Old Maid

The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex

Goodbye, Mr. Chips

Made For Each Other

Wuthering Heights

Ninotchka

The Little Princess

In addition to the great movies each of you listed, I'd like to mention Love Affair (Irene Dunne, Charles Boyer, Maria Ouspenskaya) and Midnight (Claudette Colbert, Don Ameche, John Barrymore, Francis Lederer, Mary Astor) as a couple other 1939 favourites.

  1. The Wizard of Oz
  2. The Hound of the Baskervilles
  3. The Rules of the Game
  4. Mr Smith Goes to Washington

In my humble opinion, 1939 was the year for classic cinema, particularly American cinema.

  1. On Borrowed Time
  2. Stagecoach
  3. Gone with Wind
  4. Goodbye, Mr. Chips
  5. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
  6. The Son of Frankenstein
  7. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
  8. The Wizard of Oz
  9. Wuthering Heights

Spot No. 10 is a toss-up between Ninotchka and Midnight.
