Well, it said when the credits came up that the film was 'A Twenty-first century portrait'. So I see it as supposed to be a snapshot character study of a prominent figure of our times rather than a beginning, middle and end story with all it's story threads tied up.

I think showing her on stage at the end for quite a while was to give us the sense of the difference in perception of the image of the celebrity we actually see and the way they are in their lives. She was clearly a very damaged person, riddled with anxieties and very self centered and controlling but you wouldn't be able to see that through the sheen of her stage performance. I thought the contrast worked very well.
