Who dares to try and make sense of the opening shots of the man trying to escape the asylum and how it has anything to do with the rest of the film? Was it a dream? Or was it just found footage spliced in to fill some time, perhaps to give us the impression this film had something more sinister afoot?

It was Alan at the asylum. I assumed it was after Evelyn died, and before the events of the film.
Having said that, the film was a disappointing, incoherent mess that felt like half had been edited out. I was looking forward to some good old 70s Giallo, and instead spent the 80 minutes checking the time. There has to be a better cut somewhere.
