Discuss Blondie of the Follies

I've seen an array of good Marion Davies movies, and personally think this is probably the best - and definitely it's my favourite - of them all. This is a really well done tale of the latest developments in the up and down lifelong friendship of the Blondie (Marion Davies) and Lottie (Billie Dove) characters. Their relationship is believably complex, like how regular people who've known one another since they were kids, whether as siblings or as friends, are; they can be at each other one minute, then more or less back to normal minutes, or otherwise a short time, later, no lasting damage having been done. You don't often see that in movies.

Marion Davies and Billie Dove are both wonderful and excellent in this, as also is ever-terrific James Gleason as Blondie's father. His beautifully touching performance rings absolutely true. It's deeply moving when he comes to see Blondie at Lottie's apartment and you can see that he's fully letting down his walls.

I can't remember ever seeing Billie Dove in any other movie(s). Surprisingly, though she had a substantial film career, starting in 1921, and she's at the top of her game here, this was the final movie she made, as she retired afterwards. Miss Dove was a stunning total knockout, and a tremendously talented, fully believable actress, and certainly was in peak form, and gives a real spitfire performance, here. When her Lottie/Lurline character isn't being grandiose and putting the pretentiousness on thick, trying to impress others of her sophistication, instead is just being a regular everyday person with old pal Blondie, she's amazing. Ditto when her volatility explodes. Miss Dove could (and I think would) have been a huge top star of the '30s and onward, had she not given up show business when she did. She's superb in this.

This movie has a good, knowing, intelligent script, strong production values, etc. The Jimmy Durante and Marion Davies bit near the end is an added treat, them doing a comedy routine (him rat-a-tat speaking, in his trademark way, then she impersonating Greta Garbo; this was just after the movie Grand Hotel came out, so they're making fun of John Barrymore's and Garbo's personas in that film).
