Online items indicate he was anywhere from 5'/3" to 5'/6 or 7", so indeed was either very or rather short for a man.

As a guy who's like 6'1"-6'3", I'll attest that people seem to just continually get taller and taller (esp. males).
I like Dick Cavett. What a cool interviewer he was.

Heck yeah. He was one of the best. I'm sure Howard Stern was inspired by him. Cavett always had the coolest people on and he would ask good questions. At least for its time. Nothing too racy but still a damn good interviewer.
