I love the campiness and over the top acting in this film and even some of the cartoonishly evil portrayals of Ming and his cohorts. Those wedding vows had me rolling or when that one weird dude sees Hitler in Zarkov's memories and says something to the effect of that chap showed potential. But I honestly would welcome a more serious remake with a solid script and solid action. The film has to be fast paced though. I think Snyder's mistake with his DC films is that the pace is just too darn slow. Worked well on Watchmen but for story's that were originally conceived for their action, the pace has to be fast. I think it should definitely have some comic relief sprinkled in there but not overdone like in Guardians of the Galaxy 2. I thnk it could work but whether it would be financially successful is another thing. Especially with Star Wars rolling hard.

It's the silly over the topness of Flash Gordon that makes it what it is. Flash Gordon (like Zorro) had been remade numerous times with many viewpoints (and on many medias), but it's this one that is most treasured and loved. I've watched all kinds of versions of Flash Gordon growing up, this especially is my fav of all of them. Will they do another version of Flash Gordon in the future? You bet your ass they will (like Zorro will be remade again). It's an IP that just won't die.

Yeah, and a lot of the old original serials from the 30s are now public domain. You can find them on You tube. Heck, I still watch 'em. Another thing that also gets props is the Queen soundtrack. I can't think of this movie without hearing "Flash! Ha-uh! He'll save every one of us!"
I just hope that when they do remake it they do it a bit more serious. I watched the cartoon movie the other day which was done in a more serious tone and I thought it was great! You can catch it here

I've seen it. I've seen it all, as I grew up a fan of Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, Zorro, etc. Remember the Sy Fy Flash Gordon Series was done serious and it was horrible. Serious doesn't always mean good.

No, but all you had to say was SyFy and horrible usually follows shortly after. That is why the new Battlestar Galactica was so successful for them. A series that wasn't actually horrible and some would say was pretty damn good was extremely surprising. I meant like a quality production with the star power and budget that this film had except the script is not reminiscent of the original Batman series.

Well Mathew Vaughn is currently in charge of the reboot of Flash Gordon, so I'm not sure how serious it will end up being, but given his past outings I don't think it will be that serious. His original plan was to make it over the top and campy, but he's currently rethinking that now ever since the release of Guardians of the Galaxy (he doesn't want people to compare his movie to it). Vaughn has stated numerous times, he doesn't like being compared to Marvel Films (nor would he like to do one) because it puts a lot of pressure on him. He'd rather contribute to a franchise's success rather than ride the coat tails of another's success, which is why he is also currently thinking about doing a DCEU movie (specifically Superman). I'd say I was joking, but he actually said that (including the DCEU part).

Well, I wouldn't go as far as to say Guardians is campy. It's definitely on the light-hearted, comedy side and I wouldn't mind some comic relief sprinkled throughout the film. As campy as Flash Gordon was, it could've been much worse. I think even if they copied the style but just added a more believable script it would turn out to be a fine film. I am not looking for a complete 180, as for example, to compare the original Batman series to Nolan's Batman. Just something to go on that pulls the emotional strings a bit. I actually love the costume design and set of Flash Gordon. I also didn't mind that, magically, Flash would have his trademark lightning bolt shirt seemingly out of nowhere. I didn't see him schlepping around a suitcase or backpack or anything.
