Discuss The Hollywood Revue of 1929

I love the long "Singing In the Rain" number in this: That peppy gem is quaintly irresistible and endearing. (Cliff 'Ukelele Ike' Edwards, who's the main singer, is none other than the voice of Jiminy Cricket in 1940's Pinocchio. Yep: This is the same man who sang "When You Wish Upon a Star" that everyone knows and loves.) Gotta love those (the three singing women) Brox Sisters! There's also the enjoyable all-star "Singing In the Rain" number at the end of this film. However, it's the feel-good 6-some-minutes main feature performance (at link above) that's the one I seriously enjoy. (I've always been crazy about pop music of the '20s and early '30s.)

This revue film - that's really just a filmed all-star variety show (and most of the time not a very dazzling one) - is otherwise pretty creaky and boring, feeling more like 2-1/2 hours duration, rather than actual length of just shy of 2 hours. Yet, for 1929 audiences, for whom sound in movies was a new and exciting thing, and being able to hear the voices of favourite stars (in this film's case strictly from the MGM roster) for the first time was a treat, The Hollywood Revue of 1929 was no doubt quite the impressive sensation.
