Discuss All That Money Can Buy

Item: All That Money Can Buy

Language: en

Type of Problem: Incorrect_content

Extra Details: I'm unable to edit the official name of this film. Although it was titled "All That Money Can Buy" in some areas of the US, the original title of the film was "The Devil and Daniel Webster". According to Wikipedia "The film's title was changed to All That Money Can Buy to avoid confusion with another film released by RKO that year, The Devil and Miss Jones, but later had the title restored on some prints.

Sounds like we already have the correct original title?

Whilst it was originally released as 'All That Money Can Buy', it has since mostly been released as 'The Devil & Daniel Webster', and, thanks to Criterion, is what it is best known as today. Perhaps the 'Original Title' should remain 'All That Money Can Buy', with 'The Devil & Daniel Webster' added as the 'Translated Title (English)'.

Sorry, our guidelines do not allow English "translations" of English titles. worried

That's a shame. Perhaps that guideline should be looked at. It seems a bit silly to list a film by a title that it hasn't been known as for a very long time.

I noticed the issue with this film's title just today, in the course of working on actress Simone Simon's profile page. As much of a huge Classic films buff as I am, I never, till now, realized this film was ever titled anything other than The Devil and Daniel Webster; I had never heard of the All That Money Can Buy original title for this.

While I don't at all ask that anything about the title or alternative titles fields be changed/adjusted (they are correct as is, and render this film readily findable on TMDb), I do suggest that the Overview text be unlocked and a sentence added to it, reading something to the effect of "Although this film was originally released titled All That Money Can Buy, it has, since mid century, become known by its The Devil and Daniel Webster re-release title." (Perhaps place such a sentence in italics, like I just now did.) That would address and acknowledge, upfront, that this movie has for well over half a century been known by a title that's other than what we present in the main title field, or that appears on the poster image.

Regarding another issue, this film's duration field is locked. We indicate that 85 mins. is the length, though in original release (as All That Money Can Buy) the movie's duration was 107 mins. (Wikipedia [which isn't always right, but is definitely correct about this] states: "The original release was 107 minutes long. It was a critical, but not a box-office, success, recording a loss of $53,000 on its initial run. It was subsequently re-released under the title The Devil and Daniel Webster with nearly half an hour cut, reducing the film to 85 minutes....The film was restored to its full length in the 1990s....[T]he title has remained The Devil and Daniel Webster.") 107 mins. is the duration we should indicate.
