(Spoilers)
Logan made the same controversial move that Alien 3 did - killing off everyone before the opening credits. Other than our hero, there's only one other major survivor (Xavier, Bishop) who dies in the middle of the film, and finally our hero dies in an act of self-sacrifice.
I can't forgive Alien 3 for doing this to Aliens, and consequently don't see it as canon, but I'm not as invested in the X-Men universe so I'm more willing to be forgiving, but it does seem to be something of a waste to arbitrarily kill off everyone. Didn't X-3 get unlimited hate for killing off a few major characters? Why no hate for this movie for being even more kill-ey?

Superhero movies have been remade and rebooted so many times, perhaps it's become accepted as a "natural" occurrence for the next generation of viewers?

Yes, good points. X3 was hated for killing off several X-Men (in addition to being a rather poor film). I am also shocked that this movie chose yet again to kill X-Men after the happy ending of DOFP. Really surprised that more fans aren't angry about this. I was actually offended by the X-Men being killed off by their own mentor. Seems everyone else is just falling all over this film.
(But as discussed in another thread, Logan and DOFP may not be in the same time line).

Theory: Fox want to kill off these characters so they don't need to keep paying these A-listers. Now they can focus on these new X-kids and make cheaper 'X-men' films, or at least just focus on the McAvoy/Fassbender generation without fans clamouring for the oldies as well.
Unfortunately for them, they've now realised that audiences want more focused, intimate, R-rated superhero films as they get tired of the bloated excesses of epic mash-ups with endless blood-free CGI battles. So their attempt to kill off this character by tossing a fanboy director a modest budget and letting him get on with it has backfired, the film's a roaring success and audiences only want more Jackman & Stewart. Doh!

Even Stewart, after Xavier died, said he's up for appearing in Deadpool and Legion as Prof. X. So much for his "death, " lol.
Wouldn't be surprised if some of the old cast popped up in other X-Men movies and TV shows.

The problem started with X-3. Fox couldn't wait for Bryan singer. Singer should not have done Superman returns. They rushed everything. X-3 was the turning point. I liked Logan. Although it was sad, I'm ok how everything turned out.
My favorites are x1, x2, the wolverine, and probably this movie.
I still would like to see hugh jackman in full costume in deadpool 2.

Given that the story told in this movie is supposed happen in the future, what does it matter? Particularly in view of the fact that the X-men franchise is a complete continuity mess and that it is known since DoFP that they can change anything that happens via time travel any time they feel like it... I would say it is really a minor problem. In fact, it isn't a problem at all.

Cable, who can time travel, will probably alter the time line of Logan at some point.

Exactly. I don't understand why people think these characters are done for. This is way in the future and the end of the line. Plenty of time for adventures to get up to this point.

The reason is because it takes place in the future. Logan isn't expected to be hanging out with the same people, and it's not surprising they're dead. They're superheroes, they get into dangerous stuff.

Well the suggestion is that they all suddenly perished one morning because professor X had a stroke, hardly the exciting 'dangerous stuff' you seem to be implying.

It does seem like an attempt by the actors and studio to forcibly shut something down, albeit in a very well-handled way.

@Drooch whatever, the point remains that it's in the future and that's why no one cares. But I do like your comment that it seems like Jackman and Mangold almost seemed like they were single handedly trying to end the X-Men franchise. I hope it does end the franchise so they can start over.

There is some debate as to which timeline Logan actually takes place in, so it might not be the end for the X-Men. Plus Cable will probably alter the time line again: https://moviepilot.com/p/post-logan-x-men-timeline/4220996

So who will "Wolverine" be in the next movie? Original, another time line, a clone, an android or whatever else the writers can think of...?

I'd like to see X-23 take over as the new Wolverine.
