(Spoilers)
Logan made the same controversial move that Alien 3 did - killing off everyone before the opening credits. Other than our hero, there's only one other major survivor (Xavier, Bishop) who dies in the middle of the film, and finally our hero dies in an act of self-sacrifice.
I can't forgive Alien 3 for doing this to Aliens, and consequently don't see it as canon, but I'm not as invested in the X-Men universe so I'm more willing to be forgiving, but it does seem to be something of a waste to arbitrarily kill off everyone. Didn't X-3 get unlimited hate for killing off a few major characters? Why no hate for this movie for being even more kill-ey?

Let's be reminded that actors don't own characters. Yes, sure, each generation may get emotionally attached to a particular actor's interpretation of the character - who's the best Batman? The best Danny Ocean? The best Sabrina? The best Thomas Crown? The best Bond? The best Doug Quaid?
But the characters themselves are owned by...whoever owns them, and they're not going to give up making money after a favourite actor is too old to crank out more stories.
So, with all due respect to Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart, I'll just say "thanks for coming out" and would not at all be surprised if a reboot comes along in ten years.

I'm of the opinion that these new X-Men film will one day touch on the subject of what Xavier has done that led to their extinction.
I'm trying to go for an engaging, funny youtube channel so, if you have the time, take a look. Hope you enjoy what you see. Thanks in advance. https://youtu.be/sgSF7ho3cc4

Anti-hero you mean, Deadpool and Wolverine are anti-heroes just like The Punisher.
