Discuss The Making of a Legend: Gone with the Wind

I never realized that until I saw this documentary. After seeing the screen tests, I see why they chose Leigh.

I fully agree with you, Zurich. Leigh came off as being the 100% actual embodiment, in every way, of Scarlett O'Hara, whereas Paulette Goddard, even though doing very well in screen tests, simply somehow didn't quite seem like the ideal fit. For one thing, I think she was too modern and/or worldly a type. Also, IMO, she looked and seemed slightly oldish for the part. Plus (unlike Leigh), it was obvious she was someone giving an acting performance.

It's amazing how Vivien Leigh, 'too British' for some, became a true Southern Belle. Her performance was sublime.
