Discuss The 13th Warrior

Banderas' character is supposed to be a devoted Muslim yet he is cleanly shaven? Being cleanly shaven daily in those times was horseshit anyways but for a Muslim? Complete horseshit.

You mustn't stereotype people. Did you know: Not every Arab is a Muslim, and not every Muslim is an Arab? Jus' sayin', too many folks don't want to open their minds and find out the truth about others, and esp. about Muslims.

Wearing a beard is not one of the five pillars of Islam. Maybe the sharia suggests it, but it's not a fundamental of the religion.

I didn't say anything about him being an Arab. If you watch the film when one of the Northmen ask him to show him how to "draw sounds" the first thing he writes is "There is only one God and Muhamed is his prophet. " which indicates he is a practicing Muslim. It's not stereotyping to assume a Muslim in ancient times would be sporting a beard.

Every man is supposed to have beard on their faces who is following an Abraham-ic Religions. Judaism, Christianity and Islam. But things faith has been a personal choice and have changed over the all these years. Is it possible to observe Sabbath in a place which is surrounded by capatilists? Is Lent religiously followed by those who are supposed to? Do everyone obey the Suras and pray 5 times a day?

No offence please. It was just what i feel.

Yes, in modern times I would not assume a Muslim should sport a beard. But we are talking ancient times so it is highly likely he would be sporting a beard and seeing that they didn't have Gilette back then the chances of him having a face like a baby's ass was minimal at best. Especially when his religion dictates he should grow it anyways.

I understand. Many rituals compulsory. Circumcision also mandatory for Jew, Muslim and Christian. Sorry for offending not intended at all. Forgive me and asking forgiveness from the Almighty too. Just a human thats all. Good day. Stay blessed.

Not offended and I am sorry if I gave that impression.

It is stereotyping because Islam is pretty much unchanged from back then. I'm sure the filmmakers wanted to do it as a style thing, but the fact remains that a Muslim is not required to wear a beard to satisfy Allah and get to Jenna. (Sp?) There are 5 pillars to being a Muslim, and personal grooming is not one of them. They include paying taxes and making a trip to Mecca (Hajj).

I thought I could have an intelligent dialogue with folks here about this subject, but maybe I was wrong.

You're wrong because you are not taking into account the historical time. No one said he MUST have a beard but he more than likely WOULD have a beard. Tell me, if you are so intelligent, why is this going over your head? The chances of a Muslim being clean-shaven in that time and place is highly unlikely was my point. No one ever said it was the "pillar" of being a Muslim.

I'm done. Bye bye.

P.S.: Your point about the probability of a guy wearing a beard during the time of the film never once went over my head, for the record.

Hey there. Growing a beard and maintaining it is important in all abrahamic religions. A man 's permitted to trim the sides of the beard or clip em but in no way is he permitted to shave, leave alone a goatee or a soul patch. It separates the believers from the non believers. These were some of them things which were told to Abraham from heaven above. Mentioned in the Holy Torah and The Holy Quran. Christians can refer the same from The Holy Old Testament.

Best wishes.

I know most people who follow these religions closely, especially orthodox, would indeed be growing a beard. Some people go a little overboard and try to claim someone is bigoted for simply pointing out this fact.
