Discuss 25th Hour

I'm finally watching this weird movie for the first time and struck by how both intrusive and banal the score is in this film. Good god.

One woman laughed...

IF we was lampooning a known news man, OK. IF it was common for on-the-scene types to act like that, OK. It just makes no sense. If he wore a bowler hat, it would be comparatively as nonsensical.

I took it that was Spike Lee's critique of the mass media - that they're "disconnected from reality."

In the theater where I saw Summer of Sam, I recall hearing this black woman laughing when Lee did his portrayal of the news man. So I'd say that his decision paid off.

That theme comes up not infrequently. I'm reminded of the media portrayals in Natural Born Killers and Die Hard. We've come a long way from Herbert Morrison's empathetic "Oh, the humanity" coverage of the Hindenburg explosion to media as ratings ambulance chasers.

Sorry, I was waking up when I posted that. I laughed at the news man act, and I have this very clear memory of this black chick laughing aloud. Others might have, as well. I remember her distinctly, the loudest person.

Mongo, your posts make me think of "the law of effort" in regard to Lee's cinema, and non-white folks in movies in general. Have you heard of the law of effort? It means that the more times one tries to do something, the more one will go on trying to accomplish it. It’s like the law of effort is in effect with you trying to disparage movies by and with people of color in them.

Geezus, get over yourself. I have plenty of hate to go around and I couldn't care less what race Lee is. Antoine Fuqua and Denzel Washington are great. How's that?

Somebody edited my post for me. I changed it, but it looked like someone else made some changes too.

It's an effort, but it belies a misunderstanding of bias. A few exceptions do not dismiss the norm. A man can be married to a woman and be a misogynist. A person can "have friends" of a different type and still hate the general type.

A couple of Spike’s joints touch on this phenomenon: Bamboozled and Chi-Raq.

Go figure! It (sadly) remains relevant.

I could've sworn that an "In your case" got added to the start of a sentence I directed to Mr. Mongo.... it made me come off kind of unpleasant, so I edited it out.

Mongo has said in the past that he had a post changed or deleted here by someone else, as well.....

This day has just flown by, and I concede that I might possibly be wrong about being edited by somebody else.... if so, my bad!

I don't believe that the 'mods' edit any comments but I know that they do delete comments occasionally.

Greetings. Only a mod and whomever it is who made a particular comment can edit/delete a comment that has been made on a message board thread. I'm pretty confident that no mod has, to date, edited/deleted any of this thread's comments.

As I stated... "my bad."
