Discuss Scrooge

No one ever mentions this version of Scrooge when talking about the Charles Dickens adaption..but thanks to my mom and growing up in NYC (I believe WPIX Channel 11 was air this annually..and I recall it being a BIG telecast), this is the version I looked forward to seeing every bit as much as The Grinch Whole Stole Christmas (animated) and a Charlie Brown Christmas as a kid...

I still know most of the songs by heart and I don't think ANY theatrical version has been able to duplicate Scrooge's Christmas Day change at the end with such energy and grandeur! I had HIGH hopes for the Robert Zemeckis/Jim Carrey version that came out a few short years ago, but even that failed to impress me as much as this version did.

I don't know whether I've ever seen this version (if I did it was many years ago), though know I've heard people say they enjoy it. I think, to large extent, people's fave A Christmas Carol film version tends to be whichever one they grew up seeing especially a lot. (In my case, that would be the 1938 Hollywood version, as it played on t.v. frequently throughout annual holiday season during my childhood and teens years, therefore it's the "default" version for me. Later, the superb George C. Scott 1984 made-for-t.v. Hallmark Hall of Fame version so impressed me - and still does - that I think it's probably been my #1 ever since.)

Only two weeks left till Christmas, and so many fave holiday movies to try to get around to watching at some point between now and then!

I agree. Us of a certain age had Scrooge! air on TV every Christmas season making it a classic in my eyes. We really need these shows and movies to air the same time every year. On demand just ruins these traditions and people only want new versions. Watching the film today you see it's clearly an attempt to do another Oliver! which was hugely successful but somehow it still works! A few of the songs are just burned into my head. Why isn't A Christmas Carol always a musical? And how AMAZING is Finney? When he shows up as a young handsome man it's shocking how young he was. And a heart breaking story of him alone. There are deleted scenes out there with more from hell -- and honestly I can't remember seeing that on TV or not... Always makes me feel alive watching this one.

I just LOVE everything you said! LOL It doesn't feel like Christmas to me until I've seen Scrooge!, The Alistair Sim A Christmas Carol (American Title), and It's a Wonderful Life.

It's an abomination!
