Wow, so you guys saw all the problems with the film just like everyone else in the theatre. Congratulations, you're so special. I'm really getting tired of this narcissistic-style movie reviewing where a person goes to the theatre, expects to see certain things, then throws mini-fits throughout the film because it's not going the way they imagined. And while they are nitpicking the flaws, none of the good parts stick or matter. There's a reason these types of people DON'T end up enjoying enjoyable things; because they are full of it. A person who is full of it is going to be infatuated with the negative things in life. Glass half full, or glass half empty? I trust kids way better when it comes to movies like SW episodes 1-3 because they actually watch those films the way they are meant to be watched.
Sorry, this movie wasn't supposed to cure autism or cancer, it was meant to stir the imagination, which it did more than any movie I've seen since Prometheus. That's how Ridley makes movies; like a typical artist who is right-brain-dominant. He can see the forest, but details tend to fly past him. He's just not all that interested in why the crew landed 8km away from the signal, and why Walther wasn't sent intead of the crew. He SHOULD BE, no doubt, but he's not. Note: Btw, I think the reason the ship landed in the water was to avoid starting a fire. Yes, it's still stupid because what if there are pirahna-like fish in the water??
I see the same flaws you guys do but they don't ruin it for me because there's too much treasure here. The CGI on the aliens is often amateurish. It's like standards get established, then the standards are erased. How does this happen? Also... the part in the movie where the crew disperse in the citadel. One woman goes to... wash her face? Are you kidding me!? The neomorphs would throw your pysch into low morale, then into possible insanity. The black goo/spores/neomorph are so brutal and sinister, that even to describe them doesn't do them justice. The crew maintain composure too well, and I would have loved to see them breaking down over time instead.
Aside from that, I just loved it, especially the writing/dialogue, the flute scene, the payload dump on the engineers was crazy,; David meets neomorph, and the fight between David and Walther. I had a horrible nightmare about the neomorph. Maybe you didn't find it scary at all, but this is one of the most psychologically terrying movies since Oculous the The Shinning for me personally.

You may have hit upon the solution! Instead of Prometheus and Covenant basically being Alien 5 and 6, they should have been called Idiocracy 2 and 3!

Funny you'd resurrect this old thread, Knixon. I haven't really thought much about the film since I saw it months ago, aside from RottenTomatoes posting that stupid theory proffered by Ridley Scott that Alien and Blade Runner are in the same universe. (Makes jerking-off motion.)
I'll just toss in my continued dismay that it's seemingly impossible for writers to take old properties like Alien, Star Wars anyplace interesting.

Me, resurrecting this old thread?
"Did I do that?"
I didn't mean to.
But actually I replied to someone else.

Terrible movie where everything was projected well before it arrived. The whole third act was just plain stupid. Anybody in their right mind would know what the original Walter/David was up to. No drama, no tension. Very bad movie from Scott whose movies I love - even Robin Hood to some extent but this one was -1 out of 10.
Covernant on the hand, I liked.

It deserves no more than a 1. I give it 1/2 a star on this site.
Stir the imagination??? where? It was so incredibly boring... Anything with someone playing a flute (other than medieval), someone named after a state, or people calling someone by a stupid letter instead of their name is something that you know is going to be very bad. This crap-fest is the perfect example.

Saw this in the cinema. Gave it 7/10. Just re-watched it in 4k, and made an offering at the altar of 9/10.
Have re-watched prev Alien films multiple times. Read comics & books. Can't get enough. I totally agree with OP that often criticisms sounded too egotistical. Which easily turns into being snarky... I ain't bothered!
Just read the news that a new Alien movie is the making. Can't wait! Can only imagine how this mostly abandoned trilogy woulda tied up tho; was supposed to be the Engineers hunting David down for his crime/genocide.

Fans like you will consume any old crap as long as it has a label that reads Alien. Be discerning, not a zombie

I just don't think the Tall Humanoids they found on LV-223 were actually The Engineers. More like servants, a previous creation either made deliberately for or later re-purposed into performing the more menial tasks, including sacrificing themselves to start life going on other planets. I maintain that the real Engineers would be too self-centered for that. And I don't buy the retcon that the huge (much bigger than the Tall Humanoids) elephant-looking creature in the original Alien was just a Tall Humanoid wearing some kind of mask. More likely the Tall Humanoids either needed the masks to make use of technology - such as the suspension chambers - that the real Engineers could use without modification, or it was a kind of symbol of worship used to emulate their Masters.

Exactly this.
The techno-organic Space Jockey being reduced to a giant, albino, human ancestor in a space suit was so unimaginative. The only way it might make sense is if the Engineers and the Space Jockey are 2 separate species
