I, for one, am crazy about the Anton Karas-composed and performed The Third Man zither score. Not only is it refreshingly unique and delightful, but it totally works. It's definitely music that readily sticks in your head for a long time following a viewing.
Incidentally, the title theme topped international music charts in 1950. It's not at all difficult to understand why.

Yes, it's a unique selling point. I love that they did not go the generic or predictable way by scoring typical "Blue Danube" walzes, classical scores or the like, but used something different yet authentic - only zither score in a major Hollywood production I can think of.

I like (besides how the score sounds refreshingly different from any other movie's music) that it's upbeat and quite jaunty in a dark film about murder, detestable other criminal activity, and secretiveness in a heavily damaged post-war environment.

For me, it's slightly annoying but distinctive music.
