Mr. and Mrs. Gyurkovics have a dozen children the oldest of which, the twins Géza and Bandi, just preparing for their matriculation examination. When graduation day has come Géza refuses to set up but taken by force by the principal's henchmen. Καρπός του έρωτας τους θα είναι ένα παιδί, αλλά η Μόνικα δε θα αντέξει τη συμβατική οικογενειακή ζωή, η ευδαιμονία του ζευγαριού χάνεται και μοιραία η Μόνικα θα εγκαταλείψει τον Χάρι.

Η άφιξη του στη Στοκχόλμη, για να παραλάβει το βραβείο Νόμπελ, δεν προμηνύει τίποτα από αυτά που μέλλουν να του συμβούν. Δυο εντυπωσιακές γυναίκες τον συντροφεύουν από την πρώτη στιγμή· η ξανθή γαλανομάτα Ινγκερ Άντερσον - η ξεναγός του - και η όμορφη καστανή Έμιλυ Στράτμαν, ανιψιά του αλλού νομπελίστα, του Δρ. Ο Στέλιος έχει μεταναστεύσει από την Ελλάδα στη Σουηδία κατά την περίοδο της χούντας και μοιράζεται ένα μικρό διαμέρισμα με το θείο του Θωμά, τη Μαρία, το Δημήτρη και τον Κώστα. Ο θείος του είναι άρρωστος και ζει με το φόβο ότι θα πεθάνει στα ξένα, ενώ οι υπόλοιποι συγκάτοικοι δουλεύουν σκληρά για το μεροκάματό τους. Ο Στέλιος βρίσκει δουλειά σε ένα εργοστάσιο, παράλληλα όμως βιώνει τη μοναξιά, το ρατσισμό και την ανασφάλεια του μετανάστη. Προσπαθώντας να λύσει το πρόβλημα της κοινωνικής του αποδοχής, φτιάχνει ένα πρόσκαιρο δεσμό με μια Σουηδέζα. Σύντομα όμως θα ξαναβρεθεί μόνος και άνεργος σε μια αλλοτριωμένη κοινωνία.
