Baseado no livro O Pássaro Pintado, de Jerzy Kosinski, o filme acompanha as desventuras de um menino judeu durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial. Perseguidos, seus pais o deixam com uma mãe adotiva. Mas a mulher morre, e o garoto é obrigado a sobreviver sozinho. Ele anda pelo interior, visitando vilas e fazendas. Pelo caminho, encontra várias pessoas e sofre com a brutalidade de camponeses supersticiosos e testemunha a violência de soldados russos e alemães.
Na região da bacia de Donbass, divisa entre a Ucrânia e a Rússia, ocorrem diversos conflitos civis entre grupos de ambos os lados, além do movimento da Nova Rússia, que pretende anexar regiões ucranianas ao país vizinho. Em meio aos conflitos, surgem situações inesperadas, grotescas, articuladas como uma comédia absurda e violenta dos tempos individualistas em que vivemos.
After the downing of the Ukrainian plane, the crew members find themselves in the occupied territory of Donbas and are forced to get out of there alone, for which they will have to turn the "double Immelmann" with their lives. The mother of one of the crew members, who is trying to help her son escape from captivity.
